Mass car use is geometrically incompatible with great cities. Transit & bikes are the future. Tech things sometimes.

* Prop 39: Vote No! The voter ID prop appears closer to passing than is comfortable. * Prop 41-43: No, no, and no! More Howard Jarvis bullshit trying to bankrupt the state. The polling on 41-42 is concerning. * Prop 44: No. Would likely lead to some non-profit clinics closing due to fines.

Prop 39 -- the voter ID Prop you should vote NO on -- polls are wildly swingy. I guess I'm reassured the UCB poll has moved in the right direction? But yikes!

The opening chart has very convenient dates. Similar to how Ray Kurzweil misleads, the chart cuts off the time series when trends stopped. Here's the price of electricity since the late 70s. The price of compute cycles has zoomed up over the last year, and will continue to increase rapidly.

But the best case scenario is still informative: drivers don't get to walk away from the loss of public transit untouched. Instead, they will face massive new delays during commute hours. The numbers in the report are averages -- on bad days you could imagine over an hour of additional delay.

Imagine saying "I'm a Hobbesian accelerationist," in public. I'm sorry, what? You believe in the rapid, unchecked accumulation of power in the hands of a select few? Pretty sure there are other, less esoteric names for that ideology.

So two members of the @sfdemocrats.org Central Committee are on the payroll of Flock (Ho and Chandler). Seems like they should have to recuse themselves whenever issues around Flock come up for a vote? sfstandard.com/2026/08/30/p...
The San Francisco Democratic Party just blocked a resolution calling for more transparency and accountability for Flock surveillance cameras.

Maybe it never had a chance — the board member who stopped the vote from taking place is employed by Flock.

Democrats need to scuttle Flock’s license plate surveillance if it can’t guarantee data safeguards, the resolution by Gordon Mar says. It comes after the San Francisco Police Department revealed that out-of-state and federal agencies accessed San Francisco’s 400 cameras’ worth of Flock data hundreds of times, in violation of California law, and amid worries that the data could endanger immigrants as ICE enforcement increases. The Sunrise Movement and Jobs with Justice are leading (opens in new tab) local protests, as vigilantes Spider-Man their way up utility poles to spray-paint (opens in new tab) the cameras.

The local Democrats’ Flock showdown took place at Wednesday’s meeting, before higher-profile votes on an endorsement in the District 8 supervisor race and on a vote against the billionaire tax. In an open meeting, Mar called out party chair Nancy Tung for failing to bring the Flock resolution before the party board.

The argument got testy. Tung argued that there were “factual issues” with the resolution, but Mar pushed back, claiming that no one had communicated that to him or given him a chance to revise it.

“My question is, who made the decision to not include my resolution?” Mar asked.

It was the Issues and Resolution Committee, Tung said. Democratic Party documents (opens in new tab) show the committee’s chair is Lily Ho, who was, at least as recently as this month, public affairs manager for the Western U.S. for Flock.

More from the article: Hydrogen can be useful as a form of energy storage in particular cases, but that law of thermodynamics is unforgiving. Using green hydrogen to create power for the grid would be remarkably inefficient. It will largely be used for hydrogen blending in natural gas plants.
Producers are hanging their hopes on utilities, which just got permission to count green hydrogen they burn toward renewable energy targets. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power scored a victory for its plans to convert its Scattergood Generating Station in Playa del Rey to run on a hydrogen-natural gas blend this month when the L.A. City Council reaffirmed the plan despite opposition from environmental groups.SB 1350 works alongside California's Renewables Portfolio Standard, which requires electric utility companies to ensure that at least 60% of the electricity they provide comes from qualified clean energy sources by 2030. Qualifying facilities can also sell their credits to non-qualifying facilities and make a profit off of their production of clean energy.

The bill qualifies electricity generated from green hydrogen as a renewable energy source under California's standards, as long as the hydrogen is produced from state-certified renewable sources, the facility uses at least 20% green hydrogen in its fuel blend, and the facility's use of green hydrogen is certified to reduce air pollution.

The Larkspur Ferry / SMART timings (north & southbound) still suck and need to be fixed. This level of schedule coordination -- regular 30 and 40 minutes waits between ferry arrival and SMART departure -- isn't excusable. Golden Gate Transit's 101 in San Rafael does significantly better.

Things can get better in CA: the California budget required a 2/3rds vote to pass until 2010, when state voters decided that was insane and went back to a 50%+1 system. Who tried to defeat that and keep the system that kept producing bad budgets? Big oil, big alcohol, and the Chamber (and HJTA).

Echoing every intercept study I've ever seen in SF, only 24% of people surveyed drove to West Portal. Merchants have distorted perceptions about how people reach their stores because 1) people complain about parking as a form of small talk, and 2) cars take up a huge amount of our visual landscape.

It's looking like 2026 is going to look more like 2023 than the historical norm. Historically, the number of fires is steady, or even slightly down, but the average size of each fire is much larger. Climate regime change in Canadian wildfire fire risk?

Cyrus Hall @cyrushall.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
On the left: the boundary map for active fires in Canada. On the right: control status for each fire. I believe the purple fires are largely away from population centers, so no attempt at control is being made. Just a huge amount of fire, all at once.

One of the reasons the 49 is much loved is that Van Ness has 24/7 reserved bus lanes. But the northbound lane ends at Filbert, and the street becomes a cluster fuck of three lanes left lanes and one straight/right. The 28, 30, and 49 all had to deal with no right-of-way in a highly congested area.

Okay, I am not over this yet. According to a poll of likely voters from PPIC this past March-April, the HJTA measure was deeply underwater, at 39% yes. If that has held up, what was Sacramento thinking yesterday?
11. [likely voters only] A proposed citizens’ initiative for the November 2026 state ballot titled “Limits Ability of Voters to Raise Revenues for Local Government Services. Initiative Constitutional Amendment.” It limits voters’ ability to pass voter-proposed local special taxes by raising the vote approval threshold requirement for such ballot measures from a simple majority (over 50%) to two-thirds.

If the election were held today, would you vote yes or no?

39% yes
57% no
4% don’t know

I don't know if John has seen a good poll, or what he's basin this on, but he is a major real estate developer, and it's believable the real estate lobby did polling before or during negotiations with the state. "Jarvis measure is not polling well enough to win."

It seems the state legislature has folded, ACA 13 has been removed, and a new constitutional amendment as been added to the ballot limiting special taxes to 2/3rds, accepting the demand of the HJTA.
310 3
Cyrus Hall @cyrushall.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
This directly echos a letter from HJTA to the legislature today, demanding they place a constitutional amendment on the November ballot, for which they would, in return, withdraw their own. All of this as to be concluded today, as the deadline to remove a measure.

Cyrus Hall @cyrushall.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
From the other place. HJTA is not going to take the Wicks deal. I believe that means AB 736 is dead, the SF DSA measure is alive (and an important yes vote, as it exempts the first sale of multi-family from the transfer tax), & passage of ACA 13 (and defeat of the Jarvis measure) must be top prios.

One problem with questionnaires like this is that I have to stop myself from shit posting about the incoherent responses that pass for political wisdom. But some candidates have no chance, and then, well, then we can relish that there is no bar to run for political office!
My plans are beyond your imagination. You can read my book: Automated Era. This
book outlines the future lifestyles, social structures, development processes, and
development theories of humanity. In the future, there will be no public transportation, or
if there is, it will be rail-based and fast-moving, suspended in the air, without affecting
pedestrians. Don't think this is far-fetched; the military function of Common World will be
an infrastructure tool, faster and more efficient than China's current infrastructure
construction. Like the Van Ness Avenue project in San Francisco, which took the
Americans six years, Common World military construction wouldn't take more than a
month. Moreover, military power is an unlimited resource, but the cost should be much
cheaper than modern California contractors.

Yes, let's build a "narrow" 50 mile damn, up to 300 feet deep, in very rough ocean waters. That's the reasonable course of action instead of spending the same money to expedite action to eliminate carbon emissions.
Screenshot of a New York Times headline and sub-headline that read:

"A New Idea to Save the Climate? Dam the Bering Strait.

Blocking the narrow waterway between Russia and Alaska could help stabilize a vulnerable system of ocean currents, scientists found in a study."

Finally, @sfstandard.com, why not link to her transphobia? The voting public should absolutely get to see all her greatest hits and decide for themselves how they feel about them. I hope you've taken screenshots, as she's deleted tweets in the past when previously deplatformed for her views.
For years, Hurabiell has essentially denied the existence of transgender people in tweets we won’t link to here. But such a stance puts her out of step with pretty much every other political player in town, including her close ally Lurie, whose campaign promised to support trans youth.

There is a set of "Democrats" in SF who would be Republicans in most any other city. They waste our time telling us they are "common sense moderates." But come now: There are moderates, and then there are conservative Republicans cosplaying as moderates.
"I absolutely support defending the rights, safety, and dignity of all San Franciscans. That being said, it's well known I object to biological males accessing women's sports or spaces based on self-identification," she said.

Cyrus Hall @cyrushall.bsky.social · 26/03/2026
I'm happy Hurabiell decided to spend her time running for Congress. She has no chance of winning and it exposes her views in a way that wouldn't have otherwise happened, due to her overall lack of notoriety. It's also a big distraction from her other crusade: defunding SFMTA and Muni.
ON HER OWN: Speaking of Hurabiell, the self-described “commonsense” candidate has done something nonsensical for an aspiring San Francisco politician: She turned down the chance to proclaim the rights of transgender people.

A San Francisco Democratic Party proposal to reaffirm the city as a sanctuary for transgender people, authored by local Dems Emma Hare, Peter Gallotta, and Eric Kingsbury, was dutifully endorsed by Wiener, Chakrabarti, and Chan.

But not Hurabiell, who has been vocal on X about her anti-trans stance and told Power Play she is neutral on the measure.

This now plays out 10s of thousands times a day in SF: Waymos delay buses, sometimes for minutes. In a case I randomly ran across last week, it was nine minutes where teleops lacked the awareness to clear a shared lane. They couldn't navigate the car precisely enough.
