Tricky to get the last bit of traffic out without relocating/redeveloping the multi storey car parks, but that’s actually starting to happen www.manchestersfinest.com/city-region/...

In fairness many of the problems of HS2 were caused by an absolute failure to ever compromise on quality (seriously what was the reason for going at 225mph rather than 186mph? 5mins?) so you can’t win. time, budget, quality. Pick two.

My take on the Andy Burnham speech is that my 14yo daughter saw a bit of it on TikTok & then asked to watch the whole thing with me. She told me afterward that the hopefulness of it almost feels miraculous to her because her whole life the people in charge have been purposely making everything worse

If you were opening a shop you wouldn’t open a big shop, to give yourself room for expansion, you’d open a small shop. Once you’d grown the business you’d expand the shop, or relocate the shop, or reconfigure the shop to meet your expanded customer base. And the same is true of railway stations…

Oh wait? are we single line at this point? and we’re not building the station in a passing loop? Oh.

It’s also a single platform?! So you can get on, but not off? Or off but not on?

Well a station is not very useful if no trains can stop at it. And “timetable difficulties” means that stopping additionally at Cheadle requires rescheduling of every service on the line, and the line is already maxed out and thus you need to find a way to make trains faster to make it work.

A short thread on “legitimate concerns”. The phrase is used repeatedly by UK government ministers. The Home Secretary is at it again this week. But only ever - as far as I can tell - in one context: people’s response to the arrival of asylum seekers. Please read whole 🧵before responding - thanks

I have become such a fan of the Norwegian Consumer Council recently. They don't just do these cool vids, the reports are actually really detailed and insightful and oddly strongly written (for a gov't agency, particularly in Norway). Also not fatalist at all www.forbrukerradet.no/breakingfree/

CALL TO ACTION: Tameside Council has announced a new consultation for improvements to the A560 that include wider footpaths, resurfaced roads and footpaths, improved pedestrian crossings, safer junctions, better bus stops, and new separated cycle lanes.
A CGI showing an impression of the proposals for a road. There are silhouettes of people walking, wheeling, sitting and cycling around. The road has trees, wildflower strips, houses, and cycle lanes running alongside, and a zebra crossing across the road in the near distance. There is a summery sky above. Text states: Raise your voice for better quality of life along the A560 (Hattersley) - and ensure the scheme isn't scrapped. Consultation runs from 17 August to 18 September.

Longer trains are possible. But extra trains stopping at Outwood would block the track; heavily congested track because that is the mainline between Leeds & London, Leeds & Sheffield (and beyond to Derby & Birmingham). HS2 would have fixed this… @greens4hs2.bsky.social @greenmattbfd.bsky.social

Does Metrolink really need to go underground though? There’s a flat car park in the heart of Chinatown & outside the courts, on street parking. Fountain St is still open. Gt. Anocats St is a dual carriageway, we’ve only half closed Deansgate… we use a lot of the city centre land very inefficiently

Will you lower speed limits? Go 20mph as default across GM? At the moment around 4 classrooms of kids are killed or seriously injured on Greater Manchester’s roads, every, single, year. Wales has shown that lowering speed limits reduces both hospital admissions & car insurance premiums. A win win.

Eventually? It seems like it’s being disrupted by heatwaves, wildfires, avalanches etc. and this seems to be every year. Already. [Because this is what 1.5 degrees of warming looks like, we’re at the top end of what is compatible with our previous way of life, we’re on track for climate chaos]
