The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me About AT Protocol and Bluesky - Stuff Rob Wrote
I've been interested in atproto (the protocol that Bluesky, Blacksky, and many other applications - including pckt, where this blog is hosted! - run on) for about a year now. I'm by no means an expert, but I've read a lot of documentation and discussion, looked at various version…

And yet, most people aren't aware of this (and think of "bloat" only in personnel terms) because public universities don't typically (and sometimes can't*) disclose how much they spend on tech contracts, while salaries have to be publicly shown. *because tech contracts are treated as proprietary

Wild that this shit is still going on -- university administrators just plowing money into AI, with no particular vision or goal, against the wishes of most professors & students, even as money is desperately needed for other things.

Calif. colleges bought everyone ChatGPT. No one knows what to do with it.

Why would Trump end a program that saves you money by letting you file your taxes for free with the IRS? Maybe because TurboTax's parent company donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration. Call it out for what it is: corruption.

Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAI is. GenAI is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart. But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.
Boromir from THE LORD OF THE RINGS, holding The One Ring. He thought he could use it for good, but everything done with the ring turns to evil. He was one of the mightiest warriors of middle earth, and he could not resist its powers. Others even mightier fell to the ring. Do you think you are stronger than them? The One Ring is generative AI.

there is no rhyme or reason to an entire “AI” department, much less an AI school. There is no curriculum, as such, because AI is not a school of thought. It has no theory, no method. It’s just a tool. Two or three courses, max, if someone is obsessed with it should suffice.

Here in Hawaii we have a saying, “If can, can. If no can, no can.” And we do our utmost best to find a way can before saying no can. Because roads were so heavily damaged by flood waters, some places supplies were brought in by horseback.

Engraved skull, Mixteca-Puebla style, decorated with pre-Hispanic motifs, 12-16th centuries. It displays some scenes: the first depicts two figures, probably priests. The second is a circular motif from which two serpent heads emerge, while to the right, a warrior wearing a jaguar helmet emerges.
