The C preprocessor should be split off into it's own specification, as a realization and acknowledgement that it is it's own language entirely and has found many uses vastly outside of its original domains in C and C++.

Another thing AI has taken from me is just being able to use normal VPNs with a lot of services. So many crawlers use VPN and Datacenter IP addresses that even these work VPNs get ass-blasted by something as fundamental as the login page for this academic shit. I hate it here

Alteration of the "STOP DOING MATH" meme, edited to the following:

STOP DOING SPECS

- SOFTWARE WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE STRICTLY DEFINED
- YEARS OF SPEC WRITING yet NO REAL-WORLD USE FOUND for the AUGMENTED BACKUS-NAUR FORM
- Wanted to establish standards anyway for a laugh? We had a tool for that: It was called "MANPAGES"
- "The container of a navigable navigable is the navigable container whose content navigable is navigable" - Statements dreamed up by the utterly Deranged

LOOK at what Spec Authors have been demanding your Respect for all this time, with all the RFCs & working groups we built for them
(This is REAL Spec, done by REAL Spec Authors):

START DOING COMPUTER SCIENCE

* VARIABLES WERE SUPPOSED TO BE GIVEN NAMES
* YEARS OF PROGRAMMING yet STILL MORE TO CREATE
* Don't want to write code anyway? We have a field for you: It's called THEORY
* "Well typed programs don't go wrong." "Boolean satisfiability is NP-complete." "Every effectively calculable function is computable." — Statements dreamed up by the utterly inspired

LOOK at what computer scientists deserve your Respect for all this time, with all the circuits and computers we built for them

As a Programming Language nerd, I have a soft spot for esoteric languages (esolangs), which are built by enthusiasts for fun and to make a point. Over the weekend I started collecting them in Lean, so, please, meet Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, PL edition: github.com/ilyasergey/l... →

I’ve alway’s thought it’s a shame that WebAssembly has the word “web” in it. Gives it a connotation that it’s “only for browsers” or something.

Meanwhile, NASA’s over here with a flight-compliant derivative (SpaceWASM) intended for spacecraft!

there's a kind of "inverse XY problem" with AI, still if I ask to download an HTML doc and convert to Markdown, it may err and hallucinate. but if I ask for an html2md.py script and run it once, I'll get better results. but the average user doesn't know they have to "ask X if they want Y"

Most modern computer programs are so willfully inefficient that it's like using an aircraft carrier to go to the corner store for milk in almost everything you do. LLMs make the aircraft carrier the size of the moon.

The man thinks to himself, “dang, that was stressful. Wouldn’t mind a chill one next time.” Panel 2: the cycle of death and rebirth continues on, represented by the samsara wheel of life, along with splash text which reads: REINCARNATE-O! Panel 3: a solitary duck swims peacefully along the water. It thinks to itself, “nice”

“What a beautiful universe, hon" says a telescope as gazes upon an aurora borealis. “It really is”, responds the telescope's partner, who it turns out is not a telescope, but a microscope. Hands full of algae, she wades waist deep in a disgusting swamp, amazed by the heavenly microscopic life all around them.
