I am back from a weekend of cooking a historically inspired feast on the theme of the eighteenth-century Grand Tour, and it was pretty great. www.culina-vetus.de/2026/10/04/a... #earlymodern #foodhistory
Cheese tartlets based on a recipe in Maria Sophia Schellhammer's wohl-unterwiesene Köchin. The tartlets are arranged on rectanglar white serving platters with a garnish of mache, candied pears, and pickled walnuts. Pumpkin soup based on a recipe in La Varenne's Cuisinier Francois. the photo shows a row of small pottery bowls filled with the soup, each one decorated with a single sage leaf. Roast beef. The beef slices are arranged on rectangular white serving platters, resting on slices of braised fennel and topped with marrow toast. Each platter also contains one small white cup of sauce royale. A course entirely based on Latini's Scalco Moderno: The same white serving platters now hold a serving of breaded, fried chicken pieces, pasta boiled in milk with parmeggiano, and a vegetable puree. They are accompanied by Latini's famous 'Spanish sauce' of cooked, reduced tomato.
Yes, that is chicken nuggets with mac'n'cheese and ketchup. It's an inside joke.

Grapenbraden is a Low German unicorn hunt, a beloved dish with no surviving recipe. Hafen braten means the same thing in High German, and there are a few texts. The rest is hope, and a decent onion sauce. www.culina-vetus.de/2026/09/30/f... #foodhistory #medievalsky
Grapen - a round, three-legged ceramic cooking pot with a long handle. Pots like these, made of ceramic or, more expensively, bronze, were widely used in North Germany. They were stood in the embers to produce a slow, constant heat.

When I taught at an all-boys prep school, we'd do an activity where I had them list every sexual term they could think of. They'd often laugh, as many were absurd things meant for Urban Dictionary. We'd then go through how many terms were violent (~85%) and how many were male-dominant (~90%).

Photo of a demonstration in 1920, Berlin, exact date and location unknown. The demonstrators have shown up in formal clothing and brought a sign hanging the leaders of the coup, Kapp and von Lüttwitz, in effigy. The writing at the bottom reads "A quarter million participants". We cannot confirm the exact number, but the demonstrations were very large.

A hut on the far bank awaits them processing their catch, a large vat in front ready to hold the live fish. Stylised forest fills the background.

Three openers and live band for Sheeran’s tour depart after removal of Macklemore over ‘free Palestine’ comments All four supporting acts for upcoming dates of Ed Sheeran’s Loop tour have withdrawn in solidarity with fellow opening act Macklemore, as backlash grows to his removal from the tour over onstage comments in support of Palestine. Finneas, the singer who was scheduled to open for Sheeran on six South American dates in November, withdrew from the tour on Tuesday afternoon, hours after Sheeran posted his own lengthy statement to Instagram explaining pressure from venue owners to remove Macklemore for pro-Palestine comments made during two shows at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. Sixteenth-century painting of a cook. Improbably elaborately dressed, she is standing in the kitchen holding an iron spit in her left while readying a large bird to join one already impaled with her right. A large piece of beef and a bowl of lemons flank her on either side, indicating this is a rich household. In the background, a doorway opens the view of a Biblical scene that provides the ostensible reason for creating the painting.
