Both the Economist and others suggest this study demonstrates that AI can help students. So I contacted the lead researcher to figure out how many. Answer: Out of ~26,000 kids, a total of 20. And five months after starting to use AI, only four continued to spend 65 minutes on homework. Four.

Graph of student exam scores correlated to homework completion time for to groups, students using AI and those that did not. There is a slight spike for studens using AI who also maintained extensive homework completion time. As described in post, the number of students falling into this bucket was 20 out of 26,000.

Não é incomum que os etnógrafos que trabalham com sociedades amazônicas indígenas descubram que quase tudo em torno tem ou poderia ter um dono, de lagos e montanhas a cultivares, cipoais e animais. Como os etnógra-fos também notam, essa posse sempre traz um duplo sentido de dominação e cuidado. Não ter dono é ficar exposto, desprotegido. Nos sistemas que os antropólogos chamam de totêmicos, como os que citamos para a Austrália e a América do Norte, a responsabilidade de cuidar assume uma forma especialmente extrema. Cada clã humano é tido como "dono" de uma certa espécie animal — daí haver o "clã do Urso", o "clã do Alce", o "clã da Águia" etc. →, mas o que isso significa é que os membros desse determinado clã não podem caçar, matar, ferir ou consumir aquela espécie animal. Inclusive, o que se espera é que participem de rituais que promovam a existência e o florescimento da espécie.
O que torna única a concepção de propriedade do direito romano — base de quase todos os sistemas jurídicos atuais — é que a responsabilidade de cuidar e partilhar é reduzida ao mínimo, ou mesmo eliminada por completo. De acordo com a estrutura legal romana, há três direitos básicos relacionados à posse: usus (o direito de usar), fructus (o direito de fruir os produtos de uma propriedade, por exemplo, os frutos de uma árvore) e o abusus (o direito de prejudicar ou destruir). Caso se tenha apenas os dois primeiros, trata-se de usu-fruto, que não é considerado propriedade de fato perante a lei. O traço definidor da propriedade legal, portanto, é a opção de não cuidar do bem ou até de destruí-lo a seu bel-prazer.

The A.N.C., in a statement, called Dr. Christie’s role “in disrupting and exposing the apartheid state’s clandestine nuclear weapons program” an “act of profound revolutionary significance.”

From the doctoral dissertation he had written at the University of Oxford on the history of electricity in South Africa, Dr. Christie provided the research needed to blow up the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station; the Arnot coal-fired power station; the Sasol oil-from-coal facilities that produced the heavy water critical to producing nuclear weapons; and other critical sites.

Many of his family members fought with the Allied forces against the Germans in World War II, and “I learned from them very early that what one does with Nazis is kill them,” he said at a 2023 conference on antinuclear activism in Johannesburg. “I am not a pacifist.”

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque: "This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".
