Just watched the new #Avatar Aang movie and ... it's not good? It felt like an off-brand version of itself. The animation and character design is really good. And they got a number of creators from the TV series. But the voice cast is wrong, so much so that nobody sounds like themself - /1

Quite amazing and brave. Hawaii’s top court has basically declared SCOTUS to be so compromised—so blinded by racism and loyalty to big money —it can be openly ignored by the state.

What to do if you find a baby bunny. Thanks @portmanteauface.bsky.social for the suggestion!
A six-panel comic titled "what to do if you find a wild baby bunny in North America." There's a drawing of a cute baby bunny on a patch of grass with some daisies, and it's saying "You found me. Hello."

A drawing of rabbit nests. The text says "Most North American rabbits don't burrow. The mom rabbit makes a nest on the ground." There's an image of a circle of dried grass against a green lawn, labeled "It's well-hidden under dry grass or leaves." Then there's an image of baby rabbits curled up in fur, labeled "Underneath, the young are in a fur-lined bowl". "Check your lawn before you mow!"

An image of a mom rabbit nursing her tiny young who are crawling out of the nest against green grass and daisies. Text says "If you find a nest and don't see the mom, don't worry. She only visits for a few minutes every day to nurse." The mom says "Dinner is served." Text at the bottom says "Leave the nest alone and be sure to keep dogs and cats away."

An image of the top of the nest against green grass with a tic tac toe pattern of dried grass on it. Text says "If you think the babies have been orphaned, do this test: Use sticks or long grass to make a Tic Tac Toe pattern on the nest. Come back after at least 18 hours. If the pattern hasn't been disturbed, contact a wildlife rehabilitator."

An image of a small baby bunny sitting on some green grass. Text says "A baby bun leaves the nest in 3-4 weeks. If you find a bun on its own that looks like this, ears stick up, open eyes, 4-5 inch (10-13 cm) long, hops well, furred, uninjured, then it's just fine. Don't kidnap it!"

A cute bunny is jumping over green grass, and another is sitting up and saying "Thank you for bunderstanding." Text says "If not, or if a bun was touched by a cat, contact a wildlife rehabilitator. These are just the bun basics. For more detailed advice, consult your local wildlife rescue!"

I love when I can see the work in a piece of art. Practical effects in film, brush strokes on canvas, strange sounds in music, "impossible" visuals in games. It puts me in conversation with the artist. That's why - ethics aside - art created with AI is just so disappointing. There's no work to see.

Hugely agree with Richard here. IMO, the root of most problems in "reproducibility" is that "we" too often treat study design, statistics, and data skills as specialists concerns, rather than as the core of so many areas of science. statsepi.substack.com/p/a-brief-hi... (my take/Richard's take)
From my post: Just a few years ago, the editor of that same Lancet seemed to summarize these problems as science taking “a turn towards darkness” (16). He had just attended a symposium on the reproducibility (17) and reliability of biomedical research, a topic that tends to be presented as a recent or modern concern. But it isn’t. Here is Horton’s full quote:

The case against science is straightforward: much of the scientific literature, perhaps half, may simply be untrue. Afflicted by studies with small sample sizes, tiny effects, invalid exploratory analyses, and flagrant conflicts of interest, together with an obsession for pursuing fashionable trends of dubious importance, science has taken a turn towards darkness.

As you can see, it’s all about misunderstanding statistical concepts, statistical methods being misapplied, or perhaps the most important thing of all, a lack of statistical thinking, the value of which, more than anything else, is to stop us from fooling ourselves and each other. There was never a turn towards darkness. This is the way it’s always been in medical research. The question is when we will decide to turn towards the light. From: Richard's post:
The priorities are training for research design, data management, and statistical modeling. Junior scientists tell me they feel too often unsupported in basic scientific skills. Workshops for grant writing are commonplace. Workshops for doing research are rare. Methods training is too often just something one is expected to soak up from colleagues and the published literature. PhD students have almost zero statistical training, and even less training in how to connect statistical analysis to theory.
