Ahh, that's better! Nice, clean 3D ggplots with no texture bleeding (because those are real 3D polygons, automatically transformed into the 3D coordinate system of the underlying ggplot!) render_polygons( us_states, data_column_top = "total_pop_15", color = "height" ) #RStats #rayshader

I don't know if they express my soul but they sure show my age. I still remember the first time I played Quake: you can look UP?! And later: What can change the nature of a man?

Is it me or are we seeing similar animated maps appear with surprising speed and frequency across the usual platforms in the past month? The similarities go beyond the actual visualization to include typography, text placement, even the description...

Finally: #rayshader will soon have the beautiful sunsets made in #RStats I've always dreamed of, along an actual sense of scale for your landscapes, thanks to some big updates I'm pushing to #rayrender and #skymodelr 😀 You can ask me more in Houston at #positconf 👋

I'm still rather proud of the data transformation I did for this map. We had rasters showing ship density, and we made a map of those, but I also wanted to make the routes stand out. So, I eyeballed the main corridors and drew out a main route skeleton.
A map of vessel traffic in the seas around Alaska. Lines track major routes, and each line is split into multiple colors representing types of ships (cargo, tanker, tugs, and fishing). The thickness of lines varies by the level of traffic.A monochrome raster of ship density in areas around Alaska. There are bright linear features where many ships traverse.

The Tufte LaTeX class is pretty, but it hasn't been updated for years and doesn't work with well with Quarto/lualatex. But with #QuartoPub you can replicate it on your own in HTML/PDF with just a little bit of customization with CSS and some preamble-y things! github.com/andrewheiss/...

Land cover of India. This was edifying. I had no idea so much land was devoted to crops. I mean, I sorta knew but seeing it this way really hammered it home. This was also the render that drove me to pure GDAL for raster operations. #rayshader adventures, an #rstats tale
