Free Palestine, and all of us.
What kind of child

When I introduce myself as a Jew,
I am always asked, sometimes with words,
what I think about genocide—microscoped

under the coverslip in the plume, the sickgrowth.
Now, I had liberal parents, but Zionism
is a fog, something of the sky that comes

from the earth. Now teenagers in Tel Aviv
will go in front of a camera and say death
to all Arabs like the most normal thing in the world.

Now people act like there is something wrong
with us—and it’s true there’s been a turn
toward extremism, for lack

of a better word. Here and across the sea:
in my Jewish men’s bowling league, people booed
when the TVs showed an Abdul El-Sayed commercial.

Jews spent four thousand years not doing this—
so many times we had so little left, and never thought
now is the time to be covetous. But when there is sick,

it seeps, spreads. It cores—at Sunday school, children
are asked to ask their parents for money to plant trees
like the most normal thing in the world, draped in blue

and white and greenwashed. What kind of child
doesn’t like a tree? What kind of child doesn’t love
a land that says it loves you back. So we drink from the tap

nailed into bark, dribbling from our chins.
But the water’s bad and the roots are
someone else’s roots—we can’t generation

our way out of this. We need axes and maybe
a new covenant. Israeli society isn’t broken, it was built
to be a poison well.

One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.
