Leave the Leaves!
One of the most valuable ways to support pollinators and other invertebrates is to provide them with the shelter they need to survive the winter. Thankfully, all you need to do is do less yard work.

The Declaration of Independence specifies 27 grievances with King George III and Britain. Donald Trump and his regime have committed at least 20 of those same offenses highlighted in yellow. Happy 250, America!
An image of a list of the 27 grievances against King George III in the Declaration of Independence. Donald Trump's regime has committed at least 20 of them in whole or in part, condensed into the list below:
1.	He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
2.	He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation …
3.	He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing … his invasions on the rights of the people.
4.	He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; … obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners …
5.	He has obstructed the Administration of Justice …
6.	He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices …
7.	He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
8.	He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
9.	He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
10.	He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution … giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
11.	For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
12.	For protecting them … from punishment for any Murders which they should commit …
13.	For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
14.	For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
15.	For depriving us … of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
16.	For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:
17.	For … abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
18.	He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
19.	He has … destroyed the lives of our people.
20.	He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us …

Don’t let anybody tell you wild strawberries (Frugaria virginiana) aren’t worth growing. They’re incredibly delicious, no-maintenance and are a perfect ground cover. A huge portion of our yard is absolutely covered. Grass suuuuuuuucks, y’all! #nativePlants
Strawberries are so great at camouflage. One meander around the yard is never enough. You miss so many!

Pic: using my black shirt as a harvesting basket again. It’s filled with the ripe berries that I don’t eat while walking. Beautiful wild strawberry ground cover.I also have a cultivar growing. It’s tasty too. Actually, I started with one end-of-season clearance berry two years ago. In the fall I move the runners all around to the moist, semi-sunny areas. They are sooooo easy to grow. Really.

Celebrate #PollinatorMonth by converting sterile, poisoned lawns to pollinator-friendly and bird-friendly habitat filled with native plants. Some can only fly a short distance to find nectar, so your yard may be their entire universe. Read: beautifulnativeplants.blogspot.com/2025/04/desi...
Graphic titled "How far can a pollinator fly to find food?"
5 concentric circles.
The largest is labeled "11-150 miles" with a line to a photo of a Monarch butterfly.
Next is 1 mile with a line to a photo of a bumblebee.
Next is 1500 ft with a line to a photo of a Leaf-cutter bee.
Next is 1000 ft with a line to a photo of a Bi-colored green sweat bee.
Under the circles is a logo for pollinator pathways and under that the text says, " Connecting our pollinator gardens along a pathway helps bees and butterflies thrive."

Heat pumps are the most efficiency heating technology ever invented. That's because they harvest, compress and transport pre-existing heat from the air, the ground or the water. Compared to a gas boiler heat pumps deliver ~4x more heat for each unit of energy inout.

One of the key factors in a bird-friendly landscape is supporting caterpillars. Doug Tallamy's years-long research has shown that chickadees need a lot of caterpillars to raise their young. Most caterpillars need native trees to eat-mostly oaks. greengardeningmatters.blogspot.com/2025/07/the-...
Drawing of a bird perched on a branch. The bird has a black head, white cheek, & brown body. It has a green caterpillar in its beak.
Text says, "A pair of chickadees requires 6,000 to 9,000 caterpillars to raise one brood of young. To help birds, create a safe space for caterpillars. Grow native trees and shrubs. Avoid pesticides and leaf blowers, which destroy caterpillar habitat.
