The correct Democratic position on every issue is “I will undo everything Donald Trump has done, I will destroy everything he has built, and I will impose consequences on him and everyone who helped him do it.” No negotiation. Rip it all down.

Driving a car is incredibly dangerous, it should be one of the most regulated experiences on earth, and it is very upsetting to watch people who correctly don’t trust the cops turn against automated enforcement because the alternative is relying on a cop’s judgement to enforce the laws.

The best thing about Vote Blue No Matter Who is that it unloads a lot of cognitive burden. I wanted Tom Steyer to be in the Governor's race, but he's not so I'm gonna vote for Becerra. I don't follow his campaign at all: I'm voting for him because he's not a Republican.

Right, but we still need to verify if that’s true, right? You’d want to use BLS statistics and FRED data to show that said goods/services are increasing faster than wages. It’s fine to point out where things suck, but in this case, the message of “groceries are actually expensive” was just… wrong.

The issue that I have is that, barring things like education and medical care, a lot of services are more like luxury goods than true needs, and I’m less concerned about how taxis for my 🌯 are more expensive, and want to celebrate that a bigger % of people can get a 🌯 at all.

Peter Cortessis 🥑🔰🏗️🪩 @cortessis-peter.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Now this is an argument I can maybe get behind; if it is true that services’ costs, which have been growing at a disproportionately higher rate compared to goods, are making up a more and more outsized percentage of a household’s expenses, then sure things would zero out a bit more.

greatest amount of good with the resources we have?” and we begin to pursue “how do we prevent anyone under our system from feeling like they’re experiencing hardship?” which is how we end up without workable policy, because we can’t quantify “feelings of struggle.”

See, I don’t want to downplay what you’re feeling, because you can’t reason your way in or out of how you feel. What I’m trying to get at is that when people discount the overall data in favor of universalizing their own experience, we start looking at forming policy not as “how do we do the- cont.

I mean, they’re right that everything is more expensive, it’s just that (for the majority of people) their pay has gone up more than that. It might be because we interface with services more, which necessarily go up when a society’s wages go up, vs the price of consumer goods, which have fallen. 🤔

The truth is “how do we communicate things are generally good when there’s a screen in front of every face with a built in machine learning system that delivers a direct blast of stimulation to the amygdala by delivering bad vibes on demand?” is a really fucking vexing question.

Well, at the risk of sounding unintentionally callous: 1) We have to rely on quantifiable data to inform our policy positions rather than vibes. 2) Someone, by definition, has got to be below the median, but- 3) The people below the median in this case were the middle class and rich

People *do* notice when prices go up. But unless you’re a complete Numbers Fuckstein like some of us, people don’t do the calculation of what their last wage increase is/was relative to what they’re paying now.

If I’m going to be real, I think the issue is a confluence of a few things, but the first one is that people react to nominal prices rather than real prices, especially in a world where physical money is less and less present and automatic digital exchange is more normalized.

The difference between Will Stancil and Kat Abughazaleh is that Kat used a bad faith quote tweet dunk on Will to solicit cash donations to her campaign consulting business and Will refuses to let anyone give him money to fix the slashed tires on the car he chased ICE agents around in.

Politics aside, do people believe city-run grocery stores with deeply discounted prices are a good POLICY idea? What are they intended to accomplish, in your view? What problem do they solve?
Would you implement them if not running for election? I'm sincerely curious in people's answers here.

The lower two quartiles of the income distribution saw their wages increase the most under the time period being discussed, outpacing inflation. Who is struggling? How much? How are you defining “struggling”? Give me quantifiable data, and if it’s sound, I’ll gladly change my opinion.

I don’t think you’re engaging in good faith here. The complaint is “nominal median food prices are increasing which means they’re unaffordable” to which the rebuttal “nominal wages are increasing faster,” meaning inflation adjusted food is actually cheaper than ever.

Peter Cortessis 🥑🔰🏗️🪩 @cortessis-peter.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
Correct, Stancil’s is superior because it contains all of the data in the original plus additional time for a greater historical context.

Well, my take is that median nominal wages is probably the best way to capture the data and lens to analyze the affordability of median nominal grocery prices and median prices in general, but if you’ve got an alternative measure for quantifying affordability I’m open to learning about it.

Listen, I’d love to have a discussion on why I think the data suggests you’re wrong, and learn why you think I’m wrong to interpret the data that way, but we have to be willing to both operate in good faith. Can we agree to that?

If you have a problem talking data, your problem is less the quantifiable impact on people and more the qualitative vibe that people have when nominal prices go up while real prices go down.

Happy Pride to this Caravaggio self-portrait that made one man so gay he had to go to the hospital
Caravaggio's Baccus painting, featuring a lush fruity spread and leaves bedecking a pasty twink who only works out his armsArticle screenshot that says:

The most extreme examples of
Stendhal syndrome share a sensation of
self-fragmentation. Magherini
describes the case of a 53-year-old
German man who was hospitalized
after repeatedly viewing Caravaggio's
Bacchus at Uffizi Gallery. The patient
felt "an attraction closer and closer to
an intimate sexual arousal of
ambiguous nature that invaded him
and made him feel good and bad."
Unmoored and distressed, he sought
medical attention. After treating the
subject's initial episode, Magherini
writes that he came to recognize his
latent homosexuality. Another case...

Periodic reminder that it's us or them. We're gonna have a wave election that makes this gerrymandering push at best useless to them and at worst a catastrophic dummymander. But we'd better have a plan to completely rip MAGA out by the roots the moment we have control of the federal government.

There is no way to slice the data that doesn’t fine that the lowest quartile of earners were seeing real wage growth greater than that of other cohorts.

That the utility of dollars is non-linear is not a point of contention, what is in question is “how did the lower-to median person do?” and the answer is “way better than those above the median and at the top did”.
