the thing about this is that this isn't an AI problem. AI is *accelerating* the problem, but industry investment in training, mentoring and developing employees has been waning for decades, what's different is that it's going to hit white collar work in the way it's been hitting the trades for years

They don’t have to be the absolute best models, but the mega-prominence of Copilot and Google AI Search mean that their quality has an outsized impact on the field (and the world) as a whole. We should all want them to stay in the top 5 at all times.

The AI bear case has shifted from “this technology will never work” to “it will never have economic use” to “it will not generate revenue” to “it will not generate profit” to “profit is not sufficient to support valuations” which does suggest they may have missed something bsky.app/profile/mexi...

yeah a huge chunk of the population is seeing garbage technology that gets things wrong constantly and is nothing but social danger and capitalist monstrousness and then a tiny slice is seeing a complex, troubling, but utterly comprehensive transformation in the field of "make computer do thing"

If you are not using an agent harness to debug your home computer setups, you are missing out. My self-hosted setup would be half of what it is now without them.

The fundamental, delicious paradox of studying history is that: 1. These people are radically different from me, and I may never properly understand them. 2. These people are exactly like me.

Agree. Writing code will never be the same as it was before AI agents, no matter what happens with future models.

We should allow more hotels. Locals have visitors come from out of town, and I can't always be putting everybody up in my basement. I'm lucky to even *have* a basement for that. So it's either far away hotel, or random AirBnb basement. Nah. Titi deserves a pool near her nephew on her vacation!

I do not want to doom on main. But there could not have been a more slam dunk case for the Supreme Court to unanimously say “no the president cannot rewrite the constitution all by himself.” And yet, it was 5-4.

This mostly isn't true, but it is definitely more true than the average computer programmer believes. Basically the entire coding bootcamp industry was built on this thesis, and the industry largely responded with "thanks, but we'd rather have Stanford grads do our basic CRUD apps"

I think an underrated possibility is that both the moderate optimist and pessimist cases about the impact of AI on society are true & we do genuinely get a much more prosperous society from lots of kinds of labor becoming as-if free, but the massive societal disruption lasts & nets out the benefits

As a Toronto to BC transplant, you have to understand that Toronto is a genuinely vibrant city constantly held down by some of the worst governance on Earth. Vancouver is an extremely mid city blessed by its stunning natural location. The city didn’t build the North Shore Mountains!

At Toronto Comic Con @fellhound.bsky.social had a sticky note on their booth that just said “GAY” (check out their work!) “It attracts the right sorts of people and repels the wrong sort.” Same principle applies to open source systems programming apparently.

Recently did a Claude-free day on a codebase I’ve been working on for a bit. Everything worked, there were tons of tests and documentation. I recognized all the problems being solved. And yet also there was just a wild amount of “oh wait it chose to solve things THIS way? Let me dial that back”

Reminds me of the FDA with 23andme. They hadn’t done the work to prove their genetic tests gave valid medical advice and get licensed to sell that. So they had to stop giving medical advice. That is, the FDA is already empowered to stop things like this. But I wouldn’t bet on it happening soon.

When I first learned to code, it felt like once I’d learned the right programming language I would unlock cosmic enlightenment. These days with LLMs, they’re basically all equal.
