Having new classic Stevie to absorb is such a blessing. I want more, so much more, but certain other vaults have such a quality control problem that it's hard to know when to just be ok with what we have. Here's hoping we get closer to that line in the years to come, with the artist's involvement.

An important 25th anniversary
Original cover for 2001 album “Party Music” by The CoupSPIN Magazine

THE COUP
Party Music
(75 Ark Entertainment)
By JOSHUA CLOVER
One wishes it were a richer claim that the Coup are the greatest polit-hop outfit since the heyday of Public Enemy. Comparatives aside, the Oakland duo of MC/producer Boots and DJ Pam the Funkstress have rivetingly rebalanced their ass-shaking and fist-waving on their fourth release. They've added Marvin's soul to their what's-going-on, boosted the Shock-G funk to cry havoc, and let slip the Atomic Dogs of war, like the "proletarian funkadelic parliamentarian" Boots claims to be on the irresistible
"Ride the Fence." They've also inflected the mix with OutKast's quick complexity; and, like 'Kast, the Coup have progressed from story rapping (see 1999's great "Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night") to more mercurial rhymes. But even roaring like Dungeon Family dragons, they still get their Billy Bragg on, personalizing the political. "Tight" pitches woo over the Ohio Players' stickiest melody; "Wear Clean Draws," for Boots' daughter, is as tender as its arpeggio loop, yet fiercely butterfly-and-mermaid-free. Just as quickly, they're back to dropping bombs over Baghdad by the Bay with "Ghetto Manifesto" and "Get Up," in which they and guests Dead Prez swear to "fight the power like a motherfuckin' Zulu."
Sounds great. But it's a precarious position. The Coup's critique doesn't stop at racist police officers but the global capitalists they work for. There's no incense in their remedy; in fact, they're "pro-overthrow of the Hip-Hop Nation." They're pro-violence, pro-Molotov, their logo is a gun-toting sister, and when Boots suggests "you can do it funk or you can do it disco," he's listing "5 Million Ways to Kill a CEO." This risks becoming a musical Che T-shirt: a 15-dollar way to feel all smash-the-state-tastic. If so, Party Music isn't fundamentally different from gangsta fronting: a desolate fantasy about how badass we be.
(Continued in next image)(Continued from previous image, from SPIN magazine)

But if we take their desires for reality, our own situation gets sticky: A hipoisie mag proclaiming the Coup's greatness from a glassy midtown Manhattan tower is just up on some radical chic of the week. It's not an irresolvable crisis, happily: The moment that makes this a great record is the moment your first brick shatters our first window. JOSHUA CLOVER
