maybe you could use cellular automata as the plan, and then use "historical window" generation to roll the different rooms in and out of various roles over time? and periodically you could change the base structure itself, block by block, eg rerolling the CA in the lower right here...

Dead Alive (1992) - Directed by Peter Jackson This is a cult classic and one of many odd horror movies I plucked out a local video store as a kid (I definitely should not have been watching this, but it's still a favorite). Don't watch expecting LOTR.

One thing I realized last night (playing System Shock Enhanced Edition) is that no one talks about how incredible the midi work is. Greg LoPiccolo did incredible midi work for that game. The midi changes when you're near doors, in new areas, and it's so good!
