When I worked in a small town computer store circa 2003, we called this stuff "malware," and most of our customers paid us to get it off their machines. They just remade BonzaiBuddy while telling us it's good now.

Research units from across government have been gutted. More than 10,000 PhDs have left government. For example the research arm of the Department of Education lost 90% of their staff and the research office for the Secretary of Health and Human Services lost an estimated 60% of their staff.

This act is akin to burning a library to the ground. And these companies can & do erase archives whenever they like. We have got to develop systematic personal & organizational archiving practices that don’t trust record keeping to digital platforms that authors & users don’t own or control.

Speaking of women in physics: Dr. Melba Phillips. Phillips earned her PhD on nuclear physics with Oppenheimer in 1933 & became a professor at Brooklyn College in 1938. A unionist, in 1952 she was fired after taking the 5th at a McCarthyist committee. She didn‘t get a faculty job again until 1962. 🧪⚛️

PSA for any PhDs required to submit their dissertation to ProQuest: The only way to stop them from adding your work to Turnitin and iThenticate is to opt out of making your work “discoverable through Google Scholar and other major search engines.” It doesn’t actually say Turnitin anywhere 🤷‍♀️
Submission screen in ProQuest ETD Administrator with the option: “I want to opt out of making my work in ProQuest discoverable through Google Scholar and other major search engines.”

This. And I'm already seeing people erase his disability in real time. This isn't only about his Blackness, the NYT made a huge deal of his disability and reading level. This is how racism & ableism work together, they intersect to harm all Black people and target Black disabled people for death.
