"His seat by the window was cushioned and he could look out and see the dragonflies darting over the moat, or the aspen quiver of the reflected sunlight on the mossed wall, or a water-rat swimming across and dragging its wheat-ear pattern of ripples behind it."

Why the Scots will be late to lament our out-of-control climate: finally getting some of what everyone else has always had and you know it's a disaster but still it's nice not to be wearing a jumper and two pairs of socks. How to square being comfortably warm with it being Really Bad Actually?

Jan Wittmer – Angry bird
‘During my photo trip to the island of Helgoland, Germany, I encountered a goldcrest for the first time – and it was love at first sight. Europe’s smallest bird wandered right in front of me, presumably searching for food. To get a perspective at eye level, I placed my camera on the ground. My heart was pounding and my finger was glued to the shutter as the tiny bird darted back and forth. Suddenly, it came to a stop and looked straight at the camera. That was the exact moment this photo was taken’

A prom about proper bin men

You kids today, with 'net and games,
I fought in World War 2
You're not content with airfix planes,
I fought in World War 2
In my day (nineteen ninety three),
We didn't have what's yours
Things were much simpler, much less woke,
I fought in World War 2
School lunches, Oh! Pink custard too,
Four channels on TV
Not like the iphones you have now,
Was simpler then, you see?
"Image Macros" were all the rage,
There was no twitch TV
I fought in World War 2, respect
The man who's forty three

Before people learned music with 'do re mi', the sequence once began with 'ut' as the lowest note. The absolute lowest note recognised in medieval music was 'Γ ut', with the Greek letter gamma, and 'Γ ut' came to refer to the full range of possible notes. This is behind the phrase 'run the gamut'.

This is one of those headlines where, though they are becoming more and more common, it requires such a leap of imagination for normal people, that the scale of it is is hard to communicate. It’s like our world is screaming at us, but it’s in a frequency most of us can’t hear.

Sounds great.
According to experts I interviewed, the internet is about to get more frustrating. These agents may cause a cascading chain of problems that shake the foundations of digital infrastructure. Chances are good that you're about to live through an era of online chaos.
The internet was built for humans with limited time and patience. AIs don't have those restraints. You'll probably have to fight with robots over concert tickets and booking appointments. Small businesses could drown in machine-made pestering. AIs don't look at ads, and websites that rely on them are already crumbling. You'll be buried in endless loops of proving you're human. And if you use these AI tools, some may betray you.

As a 50-something legend in my own living room, these are always the people I want to discover too. The esteemed José Saramago didn't find his audience until he was sixty, and went on to pack in a lifetime of books and a Nobel prize to boot.
