Still warm from the kiln, covered in warm earth tones—I’m so relieved this piece came out successfully on the other side of firing. I worked on it over the course of a month and remembered to document moments of process which I think I’ll share in a thread […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Me standing in my back yard holding a large pot in front of me with both hands. It borrows its spherical form from Nigerian water vessels and has a short, flared neck. It is about 16” (40cm) in diameter and 14” (36cm) in height.

The pot has been divided laterally into six parts and each section has been decorated with carved lines in alternating patterns: a symmetrical abstract leaf motif and a large double diamond pattern. The colors are dark brick red, olive green, dark purplish brown, dusky pink and aqua. The interior is glazed glossy aqua to reference the water this form would historically have contained.

Behind me is dense foliage and small blue patch of sky. I am smiling and wearing a black and white top and red paints, only partially visible from behind the large pot.

Three different instars of Nezara viridula nymphs spotted in a west London garden, early this week - and it seems the adults look quite different again! www.britishbugs.org.uk/heteroptera/… #insectSaturday #insects #shieldbugs #macrophotography

A cluster of small, round, brown-black bugs on a large green flower bud on a shrub - with small white and orange dots, and one waving long, segmented black antennae around.

Two much larger bugs on another green flower bud - vaguely resembling ladybirds in their general, near-hemispherical shape - black with white and yellow spots in lines along their segmented abdomens.

Flattened, roughly circular green shieldbug nymph on a leaf - outlined by pink, with more white spots in lines along a dark, segmented abdomen.

A panel cartoon.
Panel 1 - A sign with an arrow that reads "Tree Stump O' Deep Thoughts You're Not Usually Capable Of"
Panel 2 - A cartoon pig climbs up on a tree stump.
Panel 3 - The pig says "No one knows what we're doing here."
Panel 4 - The pig continues "Some have faith that they do, but know one KNOWS."
Panel 5 - The pig says "So we are scared. We are alone, and we end. And we don't know where we go."
Panel 6 - The view widens to show mountains and the pasture as the Pig continues "So we cling to money for comfort. And we chase awards for immortality. And we hide in the routine of our days.
Panel 7 - Back to a close up of just the pig and the stump. He says "But then the night. Always the night."
Panel 8 - He continues "Which, when it has you alone, whispers that maybe none of this has any significance."
Panel 9 - Again the view widens to include the mountains and the field as well as the pig on the stump. He says "So love everyone you're with. Because comforting each other on this journey we neither asked for nor understand, is the best we can do."
Panel 10 - The pig climbs down off of the tree stump.
Panel 11 - Just the tree stump is pictured.
Panel 12 - The pig pokes his head around the corner of the panel and says "And laugh as much as you can."
Panel 13 - Again only the empty stump is pictured.

I appreciate that some venues, like the Stork Club in Oakland, are getting ahead of this trend by requiring all fliers be human made. "We don't care if it's a screenshot of the Notes app with the show info or a picture of a hand with band names written in […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Image from Stork Club's Instagram that says "No more A.I. flyers"

"Over the last few months we've started getting AI generated flyers for our shows from various sources like indie labels, party promoters, and everyone in between. And we are seeing other venues post them as well. It's giving us the ick. As an independent alt venue, we feel the poster art for a show has always been an essential part of the creative process of live shows. It's like the album cover of the night.
Many graphic artists have cut their professional chops by crating poster art for live music and we wanna keep supporting that by not undercutting artists just to save a few bucks on the production end.
Also it’s not very punk
AI has it's place in the world, like creating meme slop that makes you stupid and rendering your career irrelevant, or robo-calling your mom once a week and chatting with her in your voice. All important tools brought to us by the scrappy altruistic billionaire overlords that merely want us to live in a future of abundance"

“So starting today, we will be requiring all flyers for our show be made by a human. We don't care if it's a screenshot of the notes app with the show info, or if it's just a picture of a hand with band names written in Sharpie. As long as it's not AI slop being passed off as genuine creation.
Partnering with local graphic artists, we have curated a roster for wayward promoters to choose from that we will send to anyone that can't provide us with proof and credit for any art used to market shows. Thanks to Dracula's flute, Janelle Blarg, Pemex, Gats, WhatsUpAlbert, Roy G Biv, Jessie California, Buster Cagle. For agreeing to hop on board and give us homie prices to help stem this tide. And if you are a graphic artist interested in being added to our in house anti-AI roster, you can send your CV to TheeStorkClub@gmail.com"
