AI has made it really clear that a lot of people don't actually understand what it is software engineers DO. They therefore think that using LLM tools to aid in software development means slacking off, kicking up your feet, and letting the computer churn out slop because you don't care.

Like many, I wondered why OAI released what they did when and how they did. I suspect this is by far the best explanation we'll see for some time if ever and helped me understand the dynamics driving this.

I'm not criticizing the person in this post, but occasionally I'm reminded of the gap between software engineers working with frontier models ("Luna 6 is so cheap but I bet Opus 5.5 will handle this with less hand holding...") and normal people (correctly!) convinced Copilot and Gemini are terrible.
I checked DeepL and Copilot, and they seemed closer to what I was getting when I translated it manually. I'm not sure how they differ exactly, but I've found Gemini to be one of the worst Al systems in general regardless of task when I was forced to use the tech at all.

Yesterday. (Probably later today too.) That's literally what my job is. It's called being a "software engineer".

If you had enough resources, you could run a human brain on a system of gears & diesel power. It'd be massive, but watching the gears & levers move, it'd be evident that the outputs are not the result of a mind. Part of the illusion of human minds is the tiny scale of synapses

I wonder if Google AI search results are still a horrifying nightmare? ...Oh. Oh no. 💀 (Result obtained personally within the last 10m and not edited in any way.)
Al Overview

Squints eyes innocently and tilts head sideways.

Whimpers softly.

Sniffs the edge of the living room rug because it feels like nice, soft grass.

Squats and lets out a tiny, warm puddle while maintaining intense, unblinking eye contact with you.

Sneezes, wags a stubby tail, and looks at you as if to say: "Why are you yelling?/ am a master decorator and this rug needed warm water."

AS I HAVE TOLD YOU BEFORE, mister dracula, face ID isn’t going to work for you, you are going to need to memorize a passcode. do you need me to help you set it up again? no, i definitely can’t come over there to help. no, remember, we tried video chat before, i just see the back of your chair.

The fact I know exactly who he's talking about is a bad sign isn't it? (I think I may have missed the firebombing threat though, so maybe there's still hope for me.)

An interesting discussion, which I broadly agree with. The "Strong Stochastic Parrot Theory" seemed to explain how early models work, but is trivially disproven for later models. If you care about what LLMs can and can't do and (especially) if you consider yourself a skeptic this stuff matters!

Insane seeing people get hyped about a FREE open source project - say how awesome it is, use it and enjoy it, then learn there’s an AGENTS file in the source and suddenly hate it and it’s slop and bad and nobody should use it ???? Ur allowed to enjoy things oomfie.

How do we incentivize people to paint wizards on their vans again I haven’t seen a wizard van in a decade and it feels like we lost something precious Can we offer up a tax credit? Little bags of shrooms? Start a wizard van painting program at vocational schools?

The day I realised agents can finally solve complicated merge conflicts was unironically one of the best days I've had this year. I will never emotionally recover from an afternoon I lost somehow resolving the same insane merge conflict 10+ times on a large stacked PR a while back.

There's a couple more flavours here. I'd frame it more as AI is a tool that allows building both versions, potentially either faster, with a higher quality, or cheaper (pick any 2). Which version any given dev or eng team will choose to build is orthogonal. But remember that the right version is...

one of the weird things about being a software dev in the age of coding agents is that suddenly a bunch of random people online have developed firm opinions about how you should do your job. it's like being an NFL quarterback but without all the fame and money.

The people who get this far and then don't continue with "...and obviously this is misguided and harmful and we have a duty to gently bring these people back to reality before they cause catastrophic harm" confuse me. Yeah, there are people claiming Talerico is no better than Paxton. And...?

As a software engineer, I'd consider myself an AI skeptic but at this point that means I'd say "every 3 months" not 1-2. It's disconcerting how fast things change. The difference between now and Feb is enormous. People don't want to hear that all the conclusions they drew from testing...

"average AI agent posts to online wikis during training" factoid actualy just statistical error. average agent posts 0 times per training run. Astras OpemAI, who lives in gpu & posts over 10,000 times each run, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

Couldn't agree more. And once you start looking it's very common and absurdly toxic. Maybe especially in modding communities. You can literally get death threats because you didn't respond quickly enough to someone asking for support for a free mod.

Quite right. But also, this drives a regular feature of political commentary which is when someone loudly proclaims that something which is already illegal is bad, actually, and there oughta be a law against it. Which there is, but what they mean is "maybe we should enforce it!"

Depends why you think it's a big deal but: 1) OAI was super bad about running the tests, ensuring goals could be met, sandboxing it, monitoring, etc. Outsourced key tasks to a startup who fucked it up. OAI doesn't seem to think agents are dangerous or alignment is that important!

There's a number of errors here but I want to call out the very first one which I think drives a lot of the rest: We're discussing people being scammed by *slavers*. Not slaves. Slaves do not have agency; it's part of the definition. And giving money to slavers is ontologically evil.

People post the wildest, most easily disproven things. I'm sure that sentiment makes them feel better, and shouting out even more so but (importantly) it's not *true*. Ironic since apparently incorrect unsourced claims are something they care about.

My pet theory is a lot of people instinctively don't grasp how fast the tech is moving. Understandable; it's arguably unprecedented. But if I do a deep dive on most tech I will be able to make informed comments for years. 18 month old experience with LLMs is almost meaningless.
