NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:

If Democrats think winning back congress this year and the presidency in 2028 is enough, they are sorely mistaken. We'll be right back where we're at in 2032 with an even more fascist and white supremacist Republican party. It's not enough to win power.

I don't love dunking on folks but it's so fucking funny to me that Trump was convicted of 34 felonies 2 years ago, faced no punishment, and went on to win the presidency a second time and journalists are still like, "hmm, I have an inkling that maybe he believes he's above the law for some reason."
Post from NYT reporter Eric Lipton

"What an odd moment in United States history.

A U.S. president is running an overtly political campaign advertisement, right before midterm elections, paid for by the U.S. government.

Trump appears to believe he is immune from any kind of legal limit."

It is that time of year when Boston Magazine releases its annual "Wealthiest Public High Schools in Greater Boston" list. Please don't read these type of lists. Do more harm than good. They are not thoughtfully assessing teaching or learning and are just created to get clicks.
Picture of a school door with "public school" above it.

The Top Public High Schools in Greater Boston, Ranked for 2026
By Boston magazine staff
We crunched the numbers to come up with our guide to the region’s top-performing schools.

About the 2026 list

This year’s rankings offer a statistical analysis of the top-performing high schools in the Greater Boston area. To ensure accuracy and consistency, it is compiled with the most recent data available at presstime from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). In an effort to provide additional transparency, we’ve included median household income and home prices for each high school’s town(s). We have also included several “honor roll” lists so you can see in what areas, exactly, different schools excel, as well as a list of high-performing schools in areas with lower median home prices. You can find those here.

COAL CONSUMPTION AFFECT.
ING CLIMATE.
The furnaces of the world are now
burning about
2,000,000,000 tons of

When this is burned,
uniting with oxygen, it adds about 7,000,000,000 tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere yearly. This tends to make the air a more effective blanket for the carth and to raise its temperature. The effect may be considerable in a few centuries.

“Teachers as technicians” is something I think about a lot. Exclusively following the script in a given curriculum material means that some students inevitably get left behind. Teachers have to be able to learn about and respond to student needs.

This is a huge issue across the country. In elem. schools we almost exclusively teach reading and math, with hardly any time for anything else. Then kids get to secondary schools and we wonder why they aren’t more curious and don’t critically think.

Veteran teachers left, principals cycled through too, and high-poverty schools likely faced the greatest strain. Here’s what years of churn did to classrooms.

The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

That’s it. That’s the story
