One of last year's projects for Michigan middle schoolers in our Third Coast Learning Collaborative connected them with students in Ukraine impacted by war. For most Ukrainian students it was their first time speaking with native English speakers! That project just made Ukrainian broadcast news:

But seriously, what's our response? "As climate emergencies increasingly disrupt schooling, we can be responsive to the changing climate, responsive to student learning — or both — but we can’t do neither and expect the outcome to lead to better learning or a more livable planet."
For all of the hand-wringing over projected economic costs of learning loss, the costs of climate change have been estimated as high as $38 trillion per year by 2049, not including global reductions in incomes and productivity estimated by 2100. In a vicious cycle, climate emergencies will drive further school disruption, and more pressure will be put on schools to make up the difference in lost learning, even as resources are diverted to remedy other climate impacts. As climate emergencies increasingly disrupt schooling, we can be responsive to the changing climate, responsive to student learning — or both — but we can’t do neither and expect the outcome to lead to better learning or a more livable planet.

It’s never been enough to 'prepare every learner for a lifetime of personal success', but a pedagogy of normalcy seems particularly maladaptive for the challenges our students will face. So what does a human-centered education look like 100 (or 85) seconds from midnight?

Years ago I tried to bring together Gert Biesta & Yong Zhao's ideas about 'why what works won't work' and 'why what works may hurt', seems worth sharing now especially: www.humanrestorationproject.org/writing/why-...
Medical research is held as a field for education to emulate. Education researchers have been urged to adopt randomized controlled trials, a more ‘scientific’ research method believed to have resulted in the advances in medicine. But a much more important lesson education needs to borrow from medicine has been ignored. That is the study of side effects. Medical research is required to investigate both the intended effects of any medical interventions and their unintended adverse effects, or side effects. In contrast, educational research tends to focus only on proving the effectiveness of practices and policies in pursuit of ‘what works’. It has generally ignored the potential harms that can result from what works.

Evidence about autonomy support and control overall: based on 181 studies, instructor autonomy support relates positively to desireable student outcomes and instructor control related positively to UNdesireable student outcomes.Autonomy support is also good for instructors: improving self-efficacy, job satisfaction, vitality, and decreasing exhaustion
