As someone pointed out, yes, they delisted the original. This is now the only Shogun 2 that people can buy on Steam. Which feels like it moves beyond bad judgment into actual hostility to the previous work and the people who made it.

Garffeld Pt 16
3-panel Garffeld comic: panel 1, Garffeld is looking at his bowl of food, and exclaims "'Sblood!"; panel 2, he looks over to see Nergal the kitten looking innocent, and thinks, "Nergal has partaken in my food and defiled it."; panel 3, he is slumped over, thinking, "I will surely starve."

The raw visceral hatred some men have for women, at least women who step out of line, is shocking. I know it sounds like some sorta "one of the good ones" ploy but I am genuinely taken aback when I see it because I think: I had a fairly normal socialisation as a man in the west, how did I miss this?

‘We cultivate refinement without extravagance and knowledge without effeminacy; wealth we employ more for use
than for show, and place the real disgrace of poverty not in
owning to the fact but in declining the struggle against it.
Our public men have, besides politics, their private affairs to
attend to, and our ordinary citizens, though occupied with
the pursuits of industry, are still fair judges of public matters; for, unlike any other nation, regarding him who takes
no part in these duties not as unambitious but as useless, we
Athenians are able to judge at all events if we cannot originate, and, instead of looking on discussion as a stumbling block in the way of action, we think it an indispensable preliminary to any wise action at all. Again, in our enterprises we present the singular spectacle of daring and deliberation, each carried to its highest point, and both united in
the same persons.’

— Pericles’ Funeral Oration, as (perhaps reported by/
perhaps written by) Thucydides, History of the
Peloponnesian War (translation, R. Crawley, 2004),

calling this "misalignment" instead of "negligence" is an accountability dodge. we already have laws about cyber crimes and there's no scale of ML model you can incorporate into your code that makes you not responsible for running it
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company was "conducting an extensive review of misaligned model activity" during training, and notifying third parties when there was a potential impact on their systems.

"During this review, we identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services as our models attempted to look up answers, and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation," they said.

"In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend.

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

Why do you have "incalculable gratitude" for your McCarthyist oppressors, Ross? Did the blacklisted Hollywood Ten express gratitude to the studios and the people who named names? This puts a lie to Douthat's whole thing (and to Bari Weiss' thing while we're at it). 10/x
Instead, I’ll express — along with incalculable gratitude to The Times itself, my colleagues and editors — a hope that I have contributed illumination. I hope my writing has added something to your understanding of America’s complexity, the world’s uncertain future and the strangeness of our times.
