You would much much much much rather be a median American today, or even a bottom-quartile American, than in the 1980s. It's not even a close call. The standard of material prosperity is so much higher now that it can be hard to even make the comparison.

So you're telling me that Gerald Ford was thrown all of a sudden into a job it technically should have been ready for but of course wasn't, and is now asked to quickly finish off its mission and not return? That's wild.

Had to be at least a decade ago that a NPR show hosted a historian who had published a book on the Stasi and the SS. It turned out the SS et al., had not been the magical intelligence machines at all but had relied almost entirely on neighbors lining up to rat out each other.

One thing to understand is that jackasses like me graduated from law school basically believing that, while nothing like <all this> was realistic in our lifetimes, if it did happen, then our Supreme Court with all its flaws would respond roughly like this judge did, maybe 9-0.

Been hoping to see something like this. Even putting aside my political views, legally, I cannot square (1) basic principles of self-defense, amplified by 2nd Amend law and some state statutes with (2) complying with armed people who can't be identified as genuine law enforcement. (2) cannot stand.

Fuck it. Saying that the ending of Taxi Driver is “all in Travis' head” shows a depressing lack of media literacy. The ending being a dream would undermine the entire movie, which is a story about a broken man being rewarded for violence by a sick society. Yeah come at me, I don't care. I'm right.

The most forbidden words in American English right now are "things have largely gotten better in the past 30 years". Yes there are exceptions to that trend and nobody's saying we can't do better. But if you say those words it'll be hard to find a soul to come to your defense.

this is why I always push back against nihilists who say things like “everyone in DC is corrupt” not only does it give cover to people who are actually corrupt… but also the average congressperson could quit their job tomorrow and make at least 2x as much as a TV commentator, board member, etc.

So CBS is cancelling the Late Show, which regularly skewered Donald Trump just a week or so after its parent company agreed to pay a bribe to Donald Trump to get its merger approved with a company run by the son of one of Trump's biggest donors/supporters. Nothing to see here.
