DESIGNING WOMEN, the tv show from the late 80s, is a feminist masterpiece I never heard about. Loving binging the show.

Naomi Rendina @naomirendina.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

I really want to try one more time to make my dissertation into a book. But no one ever wants it: the first book length work on the history of Pitocin. Fun subplots of creating/removing choice from women, and another one about natural birth not being a thing. It’s a fun one.

I’m an anxious ball of terrified anxiety waiting to find out if we got the contract and if I have a job….so I went to the bookstore, as one does. Book haul tax:

We’re at the part of the year (for me) in federal contracting that other companies start posting your job bc they think they’re winning the contract. The uncertainty is panic-inducing cruelty.

I keep getting told how important it is to make friends and have my own hobbies now that Only Child is preparing to leave for college next year. New friend is taking me to an 8am workout pj a Saturday. I need less motivated friends?

I’m excited and terrified at the prospect of reengaging with my dissertation research. It’s still so important and means so much to me. Hoping this time leads to the book!

Ageing: the condition of becoming less serious about all you were once far too serious about and more serious about all that you once undervalued.

I started painting doors in my office to increase the dark academia vibes, but the dark door vibes migrated and now I have more painting to do. I’m really excited for my dark colorful era.

Normally my husband paints and does those things….he left the house to go do something and I painted a door. No regrets.

I put faux stained glass up above my bathtub and it is one way I added whimsy to my bathroom. (By me, I mean my husband renovated our bathroom for me)

I said this earlier but only just now saw that Texas (I think?) is trying to prohibit surrogacy and only use “natural” reproductive methods. Told you so. I have the book drafted for when you’re ready.

The Hall of Forty at @unipd.bsky.social was one of my favorite spots. Galileo’s lecturn is there!!!! A historian of medicine can dream of presenting in this hall. Okay….I dream of presenting in this hall.

Last summer I went to the University of Padua and was able to stand in the worlds first anatomical theater. As a historian of medicine, it was awesome.

My unpublished hot historical take is that reproductive choice isn’t limited to elective termination- it’s within how we birth our babies and they’re coming for it. “Natural” birth will become the only “option.” They’re coming for your choices- Pitocin, csection, IVF. All of it.

I said they were coming for drugs in birth years ago, and no wants wants the book. These drugs helps full term, wanted pregnancies, and they’ll be criminalized. Physicians said this would happen 86 years ago.

Teen needed new retainers so I dropped off the mold. She and I were headed out of the country, so I left her dad’s number for them to call to pick up the retainers. They texted me while I was gone and then again as I walked off the plane coming home.
