Charlottesville is celebrating 50 years of its Downtown Mall. It was one of many similar walking malls built during the ‘60s and ‘70s, but it’s only one of a few that still survive today. Historians say its success was far from a given when city planners first envisioned the stretch.

This change allows students and staff to travel home before the most severe weather is expected.
Dismissal times will be:
11:30 a.m. - All elementary schools
12:05 p.m. - Trailhead Learning Community
12:15 p.m. - ACE Academy - Seminole Place
12:30 p.m. - Community Lab School
12:50 p.m. - All high schools
1:05 p.m. - All middle schools
School buses will arrive earlier than usual based on these dismissal times.
All after-school activities are canceled. EDEP's AfterSchool Enrichment Program will not operate. Offices will close at 2 p.m.

At least three colleges in Virginia are investigating ongoing bomb threats at on-campus libraries Friday. As of 1:15 p.m., the University of Virginia, George Mason University and Bridgewater College had all received bomb threats, according to their respective schools. www.vpm.org/news/2026-03...

The University of Virginia submitted its first quarterly report to the US Department of Justice as part of an agreement to halt federal investigations into the school’s DEI practices in late December. But some School of Nursing faculty say part of what the public university reported isn’t accurate.

Two bills aimed at establishing a "right to repair" — one for devices with digital components, the other for farm equipment — failed without a hearing this year. They were proposed in response to increasingly difficult equipment repairs, as software and complicated circuitry have become commonplace

Despite what a post said on the Charlottesville subreddit, a local Waffle House will be open through the winter storm. Shelley Herring, who works in customer service at the location, said the restaurant will be open this weekend. “We are nonstop, 24/7,” Herring told VPM News on Friday.
