I am not given to hyperbole when it comes to university industrial relations, but this feels like an existential event. The heart of the university is being torn out, with long-lasting consequences. These strikes are a last-ditch attempt to stop that. Will anyone listen?

These cuts disproportionately target the arts & humanities: the Business School loses only three courses; the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures loses 48 – many of these are joint degrees, removing the optional breadth of study which has always been one of the appeals of a Scottish degree

A spell in a 15th-century grimoire for summoning a demon to find buried treasure. Sloane MS 3849, f. 18r. #medievalsky
Medieval spell to find buried treasure, with diagrams. When you come to a place where you believe there to be treasure hidden, you must draw a quadrangle in the earth as shown in the diagrams. Then burn or boil frankincense, saffron, and a dyed red rose and breath in the fumes, presenting the concoction to each corner of the quadrangle, this will bind the spirit to you when he appears in one of the corners.

a world without trans people has never existed and never will
a medieval style digital drawing of an androgynous brown-skinned knight on horseback on a hill, stabbing a long gold spear into a blue dragon on the ground. the knight has a gold halo behind their head and wears a suit of silver armor with a nonbinary flag striped tunic and a trans flag as a cape. their horse is white, with blue tack with trans pride trim. there is black gothic text at the top and bottom of the image reading “A world without trans people has never existed and never will.” there’s an ornate pale blue border around the image, filled with pink and blue scrollwork, gold hearts filled with colorful flowers, a smiley bat, two smiley moles, and two smiling frogs holding up trans flags.

My favorite maniculae are in the Black Book of Carmarthen (NLW Peniarth MS 1). Both are drawn to "catch" run-ons split over the end of a line, but only one actually serves that purpose. The other acts as a nota bene signalling a verse line that should be added to the main text. This raises a ? 👇
A manuscript page with a manicule shaped to "catch" a run-on but not serving that purpose in the left margin. Above and below it are verse lines, encircled in black and red respectively, with insertion marks showing where each should be placed in the main text. National Library of Wales, Peniarth MS 1, fol. 29v.A manicule catches the last two letters of the name madauc which overran the line and so were dropped down into the next. The manicule has a sleeve with red stripes and a cuff. National Library of Wales, Peniarth MS 1, fol. 52r.
