no idea who made this but I think of that random person with gratitude every time I heat up any sort of wraplike food object in the microwave
two scenes from an X-Men animated program: in the first, scott summers and jean gray are making out; he is labeled "microwave heat" and she is labeled "plate." in the second, we are more distant from the couple, and wolverine is standing in the foreground, labeled "my burrito."

Reposting this eulogy I wrote for my magical, mysterious ex-stray cat George, who died in 2024, in case anybody would like a read. I've removed the paywall. It was very, very hard to write but I think it might be my favourite thing I’ve ever written about cats. tomcox.substack.com/p/eulogy-for...
Me, kissing George (probably some time in 2016/17). George is pretending not to enjoy it.

I mean: the people working in it seem to have ruled it out. Otherwise they’d be monsters creating sentient beings doomed only to slavery - or arbitrary death when there’s a power outage, or a software upgrade.

This is completely outrageous and disgusting. This must immediately be blocked by Congress and Trump should be impeached for this. The US is now funding Putin’s war machine as he murders civilians including children. We are lost as a country.

Listen to Jess. She's a NYC public defender. Write a phone number on clothing you won't take off (like an underwear hem) so you won't sweat it or wash it off. Always have the National Lawyers Guild # 212-679-6018. They track arrestees. Plus a # for whoever has your back and isn't out protesting.

To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. All for a data center. www.gadgetreview.com/one-of-ameri...

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

The “trick” sanction of trick-or-treating was so effective an enforcement mechanism that it led to widespread quasi-voluntary compliance - a “withering away of the state,”if you will, as predicted in Das Capital. In this essay I will show (1/191)

I’d suggest the genre of profile journalism has some shortcomings
The cover of Fortune Magazine that calls the convicted fraud Sam Bankman-Fried “the next warren buffet” because of his crypto-scamThe cover of Forbes, where Elizabeth Holmes holds a capsule of blood for a cover story extolling her genius, shortly before she was convicted for fraud and sentenced to a long prison sentence.A glossy photo spread extolling the glamour and taste of Asma al-Assad, weeks before her husband committed multiple war crimes and eventually had to flee to Russia to avoid being hacked apart by an enraged rob.

Econ 101
Person one: Taught my kids how socialism works. Let them trick or treat while I stayed home. Then took all their candy. Socialism 101.

Person two : The socialism part is where the community came together and fed your kids for free. The capitalism part is where you made them do all the work and stole from them.

A negative externality is a shifting of costs. As the cost of a transactional communication shrinks to zero for a business they are incentivized to massively scale their funnel and so massively increase the time wasted by 99% of the recipients of a message. We only have 24 hours in a day.

I don’t think I’m the only person who will appreciate this
Triangular diagram labelled The Introvert
Hierarchy of Needs.

Top: Self-actualisation - A completely empty house. An arrow pointing to the house says “Nobody needs anything. Nobody is coming home for hours. Phone on silent.”

The next level is Esteem - Plans getting cancelled. An arrow here says “‘Sorry, we're going to have to rearrange.’ Oh no. That's terrible. I'm devastated.”

Next level: Belonging - One person you actually like. No group chat. No networking. No "let's go round and introduce ourselves." Just one person you can talk absolute shit with.

Fourth level: Safety - An escape route. Own car. End seat. Knowing exactly when the event finishes. A believable reason to leave early.

Bottom of pyramid: Physiological needs - Being left the fuck alone for a bit. Food. Water. Sleep. 45 minutes where nobody speaks to you.
