I last played Earthborne Rangers almost exactly a year ago. Today I started over using the premade ranger decks provided on the publisher's page. I don't remember much of my first play, but I know these decks were better made and I had a better time for it. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/34...

As a designer of a big "wife game" (seriously, the number of times fans of Mansions announce to me "even MY WIFE will play this!"...) this article touches on a lot of important details. My opinion is unchanged, that EVERY game is a gateway game for someone.

I'd been making tabletop games for about eight years by then. I'd seen a lot of progress and a lot more women! And it still wasn't enough! Years I'd spent enjoying scraps of representation in a hobby I loved, writing rulebooks in pronouns that excluded me because of outdated house style!

Something that damaged my heart was when we released Descent Legends of the Dark and threads started asking "Why can't I play a normal tank?" "Why can't I play a normal dwarf?" What, exactly, wasn't normal about Brynn? The human noble warrior? Or about Kehli? The dwarf artificer?

Ironically, the characters on the cover of D2e aren't playable heroes. But there was still a fully armored woman for me: Syndrael. And of course the less armored, but more catered to my goth aesthetic Widow Tarha, the Orc Necromancer. Though D2e had its own flaws: an exclusively white cast of heroes

This article really hit me. Years ago, my partner and I bought Descent 2e because there was a fully armored woman on the box. Later, when I applied to Fantasy Flight, I used Descent 2e content as my skill test. My road to being a tabletop designer traces directly back to that warrior on the cover.
