Dr. Hong[2.1]—Jenny—was young for a professor, Chinese, with dark hair in a bob[3.1] and fashion that split the difference between the office and the art studio. She wore sober suits with skirts and bright accents. Today, that was a ruffled undershirt and a chunky bracelet like a gold dragon coiling around her wrist. From what George could tell Dr. Hong was almost always a little pissed at her, personally. George stood out in the class, there was no way around it. She sat alone—Kitsune never came to Quantum Mechanics. She was the oldest student in the class—in fact, it felt like she was closer in age to Jenny Hong than she was to any of her fellow sophomores. The difference between nineteen and twenty-two might be small, but it felt like George had a lifetime on those kids. In some ways, she did. An entire skating career, for example.
And a life-or-death battle with a robot monster that tried to eat her family. But George tried not to think about that too much. It had been months ago, anyway. She’d glided away from her old life and returned to school for a reason.
“Is this about my grade?” The class was hard, and George was still not entirely sure how she’d gotten in, given the course prerequisites. But she was buckling down, doing the work, and her grade was improving—80% on the last quiz!
