No two words send AI industry advocates into fits of rage more than "stochastic parrots." The question is: Why? Why do they get so worked up over this particular critical framework time and time again? I sat down with @emilymbender.bsky.social, one of the coauthors of the original paper, to discuss

I talk with computational linguist Emily M. Bender, co-author of the influential 2021 “stochastic parrots” paper, about why AI industry leaders can’t stop seething over the term.

Yes, more like this please! www.thenewworld.co.uk/philip-ball-...
Screen cap from linked article:

"regulation, maybe that’s a good result. But there is no reason to suppose that AI developers and their bosses are best placed to comment on either their dangers or their potential value. Indeed, quite the opposite: there’s reason to think that industry involvement erodes one’s judgement, not just ethically but technically.

We’d do better to take advice on the real benefits and risks of AI not from those who are making or selling it but from thoughtful commentators like Mitchell, Devlin, computational linguist Emily Bender (of “stochastic parrots” fame), and two astute AI ethicists formerly at Google, Shannon Vallor and Timnit Gebru. (If you notice something striking about that latter list, I don’t think it’s a coincidence either.)

More generally, to have a better standard of discourse both in the media and in policy we should recognise that, despite the prevailing attitude of many politicians towards academia, the humanities are an essential element in the discussions. Since its earliest days, those making AI have proved consistently bad forecasters of its prospects and capabilities. We must stop treating them all like gurus. "

Highlighted in blue: " Indeed, quite the opposite: there’s reason to think that industry involvement erodes one’s judgement, not just ethically but technically."

On Sunday morning, ICE detained Juan Francisco Monroy Turuy after he had called HPD to report a shooting at a Houston Home Depot location. That someone who called to report a crime could be immediately detained is yet another disgusting example of what happens when ICE is given free rein to roam our streets. This dangerous concoction of rabid ICE agents, local police, and Flock cameras only undermines public safety.Houston organizations and community members gathered at the Home Depot yesterday to demand answers: How was ICE alerted to the scene? What role did the Flock cameras in Home Depot’s parking lot play in Juan being detained? In what other ways are Home Depot and HPD assisting ICE?Despite ICE ramping up their campaign of terror, the people will not stop fighting back until every last ICE agent is off our streets, every Flock camera taken down, and every person regardless of status can live in peace. If you're interested in fighting back against Flock, join us along with @txcivilrights and @standup.htx for a film screening and discussion on Friday Aug 21 at 6pm at the Houston Liberation Center (2903 Telephone Rd).🎥 Deflock Houston: Film Screening & Discussion🗓️ Friday, Aug 21⏰ 6PM📍Houston Liberation Center (2903 Telephone Rd)View all comments
