This is not to say tomorrow's proceeding is all bad. Some of the bills being considered have real merit. But the thrust of any legislation has to keep in mind that, because we live in a very dense city, we need to make e-bike use cheap, easy, and safe (for e-bike riders, and everyone else).

So at tomorrow's hearing, I look forward to hearing how the Council intends to make the roads safer for everyone, including specifically the most vulnerable road users who keep getting killed by motorists whose conduct the City (slash NYPD) is disinclined to address.

We know how to reduce the incidence of these fatal crashes, and the City is slowly taking the steps necessary to reduce the number. But because this new activity has generated a modicum of harm to others, it is subject to the kind of scrutiny NEVER - ever - applied to motorists.

NYers are adopting a new mode of transportation in the city that is cheap, takes up little precious road space, and does not pollute. It even welcomes those who, owing to physical limitations or any other reason, cannot ride human powered bikes. But people keep getting killed while doing it.

Like a lot of stories about culture war issues, the question of *who* made bike lanes part of the culture wars is almost never addressed. (Hint: it wasn't the people who just want to get places safely, lower carbon emissions, and make cities healthier and more liveable.)

Me: "I'd like to get to work safely, stop others from being killed, and can point to scientific evidence that bike lanes benefit cities." Them: "Bike lanes are a woke conspiracy to confine people to a 15-minute radius of their homes." NY Times: "How did bike lanes become part of the culture wars?"

And the fact that this column mentions Frank Seddio exactly zero times is definitely a choice, given what's been reported concerning his alleged abuse of the court system that relied, in part, on his former role as CEO of the Favor Factory.

Like there's nothing to suggest that the reformers would stop helping the "hundreds of [non-ivy league] neighborhood lawyers" wishing to be made judges, nor that they'd stop doing the basic work of helping constituents. What will change is that we won't have Frank Seddios running around.

This is a very odd piece. Louis seems to treat as neutral the idea that the local party is a (his words) "favor factory," and intimates that having reformers try to fix the party will leave in the dust those who rely on the party for (legitimate, non-corrupt) help. nymag.com/intelligence...

Some of the solutions to car-based harm are also solutions to the issues posed by e-bikes: Hardened, separated infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians. Lower speed limits (SAMMY'S LAW). Daylighting. The only constituency against this are the people who drive cars.
110
Chris Greene @christophergreene.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
This is what I mean when I try to contextualize the sudden concern about e-bikes. We don't yet live in a city where we can spend all our time musing about how best to address e-bikes, a growing but still small problem. Let's focus on what killed a NYer yesterday, Wednesday, and Tuesday. (Cars.)

Chris Greene @christophergreene.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Truly, I welcome the Council's interest in what is obviously a growing issue as folks realize how liberating bikes/e-bikes can be when there's adequate infrastructure. But what's killing > 100 NYers annually is still cars, and we haven't come close to adequately addressing that problem.

Chris Greene @christophergreene.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Shout out to Chris from Manhattan (unrelated), who called in to clarify that Speaker Menin's oft-cited stat of "e-bike crashes," used to suggest e-bike driven disorder, includes crashes where an e-bike rider was hit by a car. The e-bike focus is welcome, but needs critical context.

I rep cyclists who get hit by cars for a living, and I can only guess that the answer is C. None are really right, and in many cases you are safer riding in the center (narrow streets where riding to the side may invite a motorist to pass too closely, forcing you into dooring zone).
