Something symbolic about Keir Starmer's resignation speech with the EU anthem in the background: much of UK's recent political instability came fm inability to accept being a normal European country, not a global power; & many of the limits on what Labour cd do in power flowed fm Brexit's econ harm.

I wrote a piece for @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social to mark 4 years of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, on lessons European leaders shd learn & the priorities they shd act on. Maybe most important: Europe needs to be on the pitch, not in the stands: Ukraine’s security is our security.

The BBC describes Trump’s remarks on NATO troops as “controversial”. No, they were false & insulting. And his clearly insincere social media post about the bravery of British troops says nothing about the sacrifices of other NATO nations - including those he’s threatened in recent days like CA & DK.

Because international media largely seems to struggle to choose the correct wording to describe what’s happening: the US, under the self describes „peace president“, attacked another country and kidnapped its president. That is factual, no matter how bad or illegitimate Maduro‘s rule is (very bad).

Europe has to pay more for its own defence. One debate is whether they should "Buy European" weapons or buy them from America or other allies. One really BAD statistic is polluting the debate: that the EU buys 80% of its weapons from overseas. Ursula von der Leyen repeated it today. It's wrong. 🧵
