The madness of EU transshipments to Russia just continues. In the early days after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, you can forgive policy makers for not knowing about this. But over four years later, they're complicit. What does the EU actually stand for? robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/the-madnes...

While it is tempting to blame FM Wadephul or his team that supported Germany‘s bid (I was part of it for the last two years) this would not get to the core of the issue. The job was done professionally. It was the prospect - 🇩🇪 on the Security Council - that did not convince the world out there. 🤔

So Germany will not be on the Security Council 2027/28. The result of today’s vote at the UN was unexpected and, frankly, disappointing. It will be some time before the consequences for our foreign policy in general and regarding the UN in particular will be become clear. No business as usual please

Why I have issues with neutrality in the EU…
Ireland, also a non-Nato EU state, will take the presidency from Cyprus in July. Helen McEntee, its foreign and defence minister, suggested it was unlikely to prioritise continued deliberations on Article 42.7.

“We’re not going to stop any debate, but I think from our perspective, Ireland’s involvement, or Ireland’s kind of engagement in it, is difficult,” she told reporters. “I think maybe the approach and even the language that we’re hearing at the European level . . . goes beyond what I think people would be comfortable with at home.”

Important point
Worryingly, the standard policy toolkit offers no answer. Antitrust is the wrong instrument because fragmenting big tech companies while China builds integrated national champions would be strategic self-harm. Taxation redistributes wealth but leaves governance untouched. And regulation will not work. It arrives after deployment, proceeds at a crawl and depends on information the company controls.
