This is great. It's also my exact experience except that I've been doing this about 15 years longer than Mike. These days, I still think of myself as an AI researcher, but I hate what the field has become and every time someone tells me they do "AI" and it's all about asking the chatbot

An amazing description of color and how the medium we use for display limits what we can see (metaphor, but also for real!)

Last week, @beerfoodtravel.bsky.social put bacon ribs on the timeline and I've got to admit - I had never heard of them, but they sounded amazing. Of course, step 1 is to procure bacon ribs, which I've never seen in the states.

Same trip to the mountains of NC, different waterfall. I can't remember the name of this one, but it was a bit of a scramble above another falls... whose name I also can't remember 😕 #photography #waterfall
Horizontal photo of a waterfall. The falls aren't very high, but are pretty broad. The camera speed is low enough that all of the splashing looks super smooth.

Two shots of the same waterfall (Schoolhouse Falls) in the mountains of NC. I'm still not sure which I prefer. #photography #waterfall
Vertical picture of a waterfall surrounded in greenery. You can see the reflection of the falls in the water belowAnother picture of the same waterfall, but this time horizontal. The photo is cropped more closely to the falls which is surrounded by greenery.

The water is very smooth as the picture was taken with (iirc) a 6 stop ND filter and had a 4 second exposure time

Listen, Roko's Basilisk is essentially Calvinist Satan in transhumanist drag. Which implies the existence of transhumanist Calvinism. From which we get to transhumanist salvation-peddling televangelist-style grifters and transhumanist Seven Mountains Mandate Dominionism. Are we scared yet?

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.
"WE'VE ARRANGED A society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?"
"Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along."

Medicaid covers 60% of all nursing home stays in North Carolina, providing essential support for nearly 35,000 residents. The GOP's reckless budget cuts will devastate these facilities, putting seniors at risk of losing the care they need to survive. NC families deserve better.

This whole thread is great and also applicable to papers vs posters (which presumably David also teaches). I attended a poster session recently and half of the posters were literally cut and paste blocks of text from the students' papers.
