People saying "thank you" to ChatGPT is apparently costing OpenAI tens of millions of dollars -- but how does that translate to energy? ⚡ We ran some experiments where we show that the total energy consumed is ~0.245 Wh (roughly equivalent to powering a 5 W LED bulb for approximately 3 minutes).

Finally some numbers about ChatGPT's energy and water use? ⚡ Even if this is the true amount of energy used for a query (and that's a big if!), multiplied by the billions of queries a day, this adds up massively. And that's not counting image generation, which is much more energy-intensive!

The irony of writing an op-ed about how we need more numbers about AI's energy usage... and getting publicly attacked by corporate greenwashers about the fact that the numbers I use are inaccurate. I mean, yes, surely, but... the only way to prove that is by reporting them in the first place? 🤷

Also notable that the source for Ritchie's article is another Substacker, Andy Masley, who's the head of the DC 'Effective Altruism' chapter. It is absolutely wild that generative chatbot companies disclose NOTHING and then point to guesstimate substacks when talking to media. I mean, not wild.
What they're saying: Absent clear numbers, there's a lot of back-of-the-napkin math at work on this topic.

Anthropic pointed Axios to a Substack post called "Using ChatGPT is not bad for the environment," by Andrew Masley, a former physics instructor and current head of D.C.'s Effective Altruism group.
Masley's calculations show that living car-free, switching to green heating or avoiding one transatlantic flight has far more impact than reducing ChatGPT prompts by a few million.

I agree with @abeba.bsky.social here; but, for better or worse, I am trying to fix the hot mess that is the field of value alignment! 😬
Screenshot of a page of a book ("Artificial Intelligence and the Value Alignment Problem"), which reads:

"Thus, although there is no authoritative definition of the value alignment problem, a somewhat standard specification can be formulated as follows:

The Value Alignment Problem (Standard Definition)
The problem of ensuring that AI systems are aligned with the values of humanity.

Whether explicitly stated or merely implied, this intuitive specification of the value alignment problem for artificial intelligence is relatively common in discussions on the topic. Moreover, the standard definition is superficially useful as an initial description of the problem. On the surface level, it seems relatively simple to understand. However, closer examination or analysis makes apparent that this conceptualisation underspecifies the problem; hence, this definition is of no conceptual use for practical work on mitigating value misalignment."
