i’m tired of February but i did see this *incredible* sundog today so i guess all the ice crystals hanging around in the atmosphere do have a few redeeming qualities ✨
the winter sun is low in the sky over a graveyard, the irregularly-shaped stones casting long shadows over a ground so covered in smooth, shiny ice that it looks like it’s been polished. the lens has added rays of light to the sun that extend outward like a child’s drawing, all the way to the edges of the frame. bare tree branches reach into the shot from the left, and the horizon is the silhouette of more trees, including a few tall pines. but now the reason we’re here: to the left of the sun is a small, bright, glittering arc of a rainbow, pleasantly gleaming behind some wispy clouds, which extend outward in a gentle upswept curve as if painted there with a brush.

per wikipedia:

“Sun dogs are caused by the refraction and scattering of light from horizontally oriented plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals either suspended in high and cold cirrus or cirrostratus clouds, or drifting in freezing moist air at low levels as diamond dust. The crystals act as prisms, bending the light rays passing through them with a minimum deflection of 22°. As the crystals gently float downwards with their large hexagonal faces almost horizontal, sunlight is refracted horizontally, and sun dogs are seen to the left and right of the Sun.”a close-up of the sundog itself, looking like a sideways slice of rainbow just at the horizon. the absurdly aesthetic wispy clouds are still present, swooping from one edge of the image to the other and shining with white light at the outer edge of the sundog. there’s an obelisk (actually a gravestone) silhouetted in the foreground, along with some more wintry type trees. the overall effect is almost like a watercolor painting. i risked life and limb to get these photos, randomly veering off the road into the nearest parking lot (which just happened to be a graveyard because of course it did) and then crossing a busy road and slipping around on a VERY icy sidewalk. 100% worth it though, i regret nothingin this photo the sun is behind one of the gravestones (a kind of ornate lamp post looking thing) which reduces the saturation and lens flare, bringing out the long shadows the graves and enclosing fence are casting on the frozen ground. with more contrast the colors of the sun dog look brighter and the wispy clouds take on an effect almost like smoke. this is the photo i had to walk on the icy sidewalk to get, and istg i came pretty close to going ass over teakettle a couple times, but — as all great artists know — sometimes you have no choice but to risk it all in the pursuit of beauty!in this last photo the colors of the sundog have started to fade, but it’s zoomed out a little more (emphasizing the long shadows of the graves, which as you might have learned in art class, are functioning here as a form of memento mori, a term which here means “there is such beauty in the world, and we are all gonna be dead and buried sooner or later, so, hey, do your best to enjoy having eyes that can see rainbows, even if it’s currently so cold out that you can’t feel your face”).

(eyes, or, to be less ableist, whichever organs you use to appreciate the beauty of the world, though i apologize on behalf of rainbows that they are pretty much a visual-only phenomenon and don’t normally come with alt text in the wild, which honestly might be for the best…)

anyway the thing i like about this photo is that you can also barely see a larger, much fainter halo around the sun. i don’t know if it’s a true 46 degree halo or a different optical / lensing effect but it’s very pretty.
