Absolutely spectacular all-day hike in Daisetsuzan NP: Started at the Mt. Kurodake Ropeway, up to the summit, up to and along the rim of the Ohachidaira crater, then down to the Mt. Asahidake Ropeway. Easily top three, likely top one. 🥲

A panorama of the Ohachidaira Crater, a 2-kilometer wide 30000-year-old volcanic crater. Hot springs and melting patches of snow feed a tangle of streams, milky white with sulfur, that become the Akaishi River flowing down to Sōunkyō. There's little vegetation at the bottom of the crater, but toward the ridge there are splashes of dark green, bright red, and orange.

About halfway through the hike there was a natural hot spring bubbling up off to the side of a swift mountain stream. My dogs were barkin' for sure, and this helped them calm down a bit. Thank you Mother Nature, pls put this feature in every hike! (Also who is that guy in the bg? What's his story?)

A flat portion through some wetlands on a trail of wooden planks. To the side are an iconic plant of the Daisetsuzan NP, the chinguruma. These go through a transformation from a five pointed white flower with green leaves in spring, to delightful tufty puffballs with red leaves in the fall. They're on the puffball stage and they were everywhere, carpeting the plateau with a beautiful scarlet dotted with white.

Mt. Asahidake, the highest peak in Hokkaidō. (We opted not to hike up to its summit and were vindicated by the fact that its tip is all fogged up.) Down its slope are steam vents. The mountain is reflected in an alpine pond fringed by purple wildflowers (ezo gentian?).

The closest train station to the Memanbetsu Airport is this li'l guy! We honestly did not think our train would stop, but it did. It took us to Rubeshibe, a small town populated mainly by crows. From there, we took a comfy highway bus to Sōunkyō Onsen at the foot of Mt. Kurodake.

For dinner I had a delightful and authentic Spicy Italian Curry Hamburg Steak with Rice! I love Italian food! 🇮🇹 (deadass one of the best curries I've had here, and the hamburger was so tender)
