i read this and it's interesting but the horrifying overhang of this story is "mrna vaccines make it relatively easy to cure cancer actually, and the main obstacle is that the FDA just banned trials of them"

Given the fact that so many thoughtful people in the world are just insisting that AI can do everything and has no flaws, I think it is fair to say that finally all of the former adults in the room are tripping balls. I am a big AI fan myself of course.

My five-project (along with slides, video lectures, etc.) compilers course has all projects now available online free: kmicinski.com/functional-p.... Five projects have you incrementally build a compiler for a substantial language, including functions, mutation, loops, vectors, etc.

Although I personally am conciliatory towards rather extreme leftist ideas for an American, I do *not* want the left version of whatever is going on right now. i feel i have to clarify this when so many folks‘ reasoning is “well they’d do it to us if they could too.” No, I wouldn’t be deporting you.

I’ve studied US drone strikes, I wrote a book called “Drones and Terrorism,” and this Caribbean strike is different. Lethal fire at a non-threatening target in a non-hostile environment on purpose when other means, such as capture, were easily doable, and without even attempting a legal rationale.

This is an *insane* take for so many reasons, but it's also very wrong. First, the authors had PhDs, and second, it is factually wrong, since the paper was published at NIPS (NeurIPS) 2017.

Wanting to bluster around about how great your country is without any nuance or dissent works out great--until you have to face the reality that it does not actually generate greatness by itself. The US can only gain strength by enabling deep dissent, which *is* a celebration of our heritage.

Modified edit of an xkcd comic. Two people are talking, one person walks on screen. One says "Our field has been struggling with this problem for years"

The person who walks on screen says "Struggle no More! I'm here to solve it with DEPENDENT TYPES!" holding up a computer.

The next panel shows them sitting down and watching the guy on a laptop

The final panel is 6 months later. The person on the laptop says "Wow, this problem is really hard."

The original speaker says "You don't say."
