Growing up a queer protestant amab person in Northern Ireland in the 1970s, I was fucking terrified of British soldiers, even though they were, allegedly "on my side". I could see how visibly terrified they were, how out of their depth they felt, and how jumpily they handled instruments of death.

There has been UK military conscription, but never in Northern Ireland. In 1912, the third Home Rule Bill was passed by the Commons and blocked by the Lords. The Ulster Covenant was signed in blood and the Ulster Volunteer Force came into being as a settler-colonialist vigilante movement.
