It's rarely a fair fight in war. Probably best not to dwell on that

Absolutely. And Starmer assumed lefties would have nowhere else to go so would suck it up. Might've been right if Polanski hadn't made the Greens into an alternative home for those people.

Interesting that the ships were tied together to avoid being separated and overwhelmed. 100 v 1 may be a different prospect to (say) 400 v 4.

It's a curious thing to see so many people outside the Green party calling for him to go. Even more curious after the recent electoral success and Green influence in turning Labour away from Starmer, then seeing all the good stuff in Burnham's speech. Greens made that happen that under Polanski.

I don't think there's any doubt the galleon is the superior fighting vessel. The question being asked is how much better is it? Yes, tactics and strategy will influence the outcome, but the question is how many triremes is enough to overwhelm the galleon? Is 100 enough? I think so.

Chopper Chilvers @chopperchilvers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Faster in the open water, obviously. But it's not a race, it's a battle. If the triremes are close enough to shoot at, they're close enough to sprint in. If it moves away to tire the rowers, why would they rush at it? They can choose to wait too.

Chopper Chilvers @chopperchilvers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
It can't outrun them. It's heavy and depends on weather for propulsion. They will fan out, and when it turns to fire, those not in line will close the gap very quickly. Ram it or board it, either option wins.

Chopper Chilvers @chopperchilvers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
It has to turn to fire a broadside, and can't shoot in all directions simultaneously. It is very catchable.

Chopper Chilvers @chopperchilvers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The ship with the guns needs to stay close enough to shoot. That's the only way it can win. It might try to dart back and forth, but it must get closer at some point, so is highly likely to get hemmed in, because there are just so many enemies.

Chopper Chilvers @chopperchilvers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
If it's running away, fair enough. But that's not really a battle, let alone one that it wins.

Chopper Chilvers @chopperchilvers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
They have 100 ships. Most won't be able to get close to the action and can chill out at the back until their turn.

Chopper Chilvers @chopperchilvers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
If normal physics applies, then the crew that's expected to quickly reload cannons for hours on end is going to tire. Not sure how common loading accidents happen? Thats assuming they don't get boarded and need to stop loading to fight hand to hand.

Not always so smug. Working in support, I know why that works. It's because the developers have left a bug in there. Which is as frustrating for me as it is for you. Especially when it's a long standing bug I've told them about.

The problem with this approach is that rejoining will take time meaning an incoming right wing government could tear the whole thing down midway. Even if there is no right wing government, the mere possibility will make the EU think long and hard about expending resources on negotiation.

All of this
As you ride the train, at each progressively more indefensible stop, you'll be told it's the last one. But it won't be.
Labour thinks moving to the right on social issues takes them "off the table." And this is at the heart of the centrist con:
You can do this, they say, and still be a good person. You'll make a few compromises, but you'll "remain supportive," and trans people will continue to be "protected," as Jon Cowan and Seth Moulton respectively put it.What will actually happen is you'll do horrific things while delusionally maintaining the fiction of yourself as a good person. Labourites have not carefully balanced rights, they have not made an ugly compromise to defeat the fascist threat, or even cynically cemented their own hold on power. They have, in fact, just viciously attacked the rights, safety, and dignity of a minority
group. And for the right, it will never, ever, ever be enough.

She can identify as whatever or whoever she wants. But it begs the question: why would a politician run for office governing people that she does not identify with? (not saying she can't or shouldn't. Just that if she doesn't feel she fits, how does she think she can make the right decisions?).

So, closest to "authentic" would be the cast talking normally? I recall John Fowles complained that the correct period speech for FLW was too like modern English to sound authentic, even though it was. Such is life.

This is just populist pandering. To be authentic, it shouldn't be using any germanic language, new or old. It should be in an antiquated/extinct romance language.

Macklemore just announced he’s donating the $1 million he made from Sheeran’s tour to 6 organizations to support Palestinians and he’s asking Robert Kraft to match it. This is just the first part announcing it.
With everything that has happened over the last 48 hours, I want to bring the conversation back to where it belongs: to the Palestinian people who are still being killed, still living under military occupation, and still fighting for their freedom.
I will be donating the entire $1 million of my net earnings from Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour to six organizations working directly to support the Palestinian people. And I invite Robert Kraft to match my donation. Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth protecting. A Palestinian life is no less valuable than any other life on this earth.

Liberals don't like working with socialists against the right but they will if they're the senior partners. But given the choice of being junior partners, they don't all play nice. Some go beyond grumbling and actively try to sabotage the alliance. This destroys trust on the left.

Sort of. It goes both ways. Holding your nose and voting for the least bad option is exactly how the UK got Starmer, who did so much damage to leftist causes. This debate is never going to be settled because both sides have supporting evidence for their case.

Contrast the police statements about the Dover blockade yesterday with the Just Stop Oil protests in 2022
No arrests made during Dover protest, Kent Police says

13:34 5 September
Kent Police has issued a statement following the disruption in Dover earlier today.
It says officers "responded to a spontaneous protest" during Saturday morning, adding "no arrests were made".
"Traffic is flowing normally, and all involved had dispersed by midday," it addsThe Met Police said 35 people had been arrested in response to the disruption.
Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said the action was "criminality", not protest, and pledged to bring those involved to justice as quickly as possible.
"This was a very significant and co-ordinated effort to cause massive disruption to the entirety of the M25," he added.

Labour MP & ex-immigration minister Mike Tapp here, telling the racists they’re right, & criticising them only for going about it wrong & being insufficiently appreciative of the government’s efforts to placate them, and also equating racists with the targets of racism
Dover knows better than most the pressures immigration and border disruption can bring. We have lived on the front line of the small-boats crisis for years. We have also endured queues and gridlock caused by changes to cross-Channel travel.
So the last thing Dover needs is another group deliberately blocking our roads. There is another irony.
Small-boat arrivals this summer were down 46% compared with last year. Government action is starting to work: stronger cooperation with France, more disruption of smuggling gangs, more arrests and more returns.
People have every right to protest about immigration. They have every right to demand stronger borders. But intimidating a town in balaclavas and blocking one of Britain’s most important ports? That isn’t the way to do it.
