Lab co-cultures confirmed it and showed, that Methanobrevibacter also accellerates the growth of Fusobacterium. Some metabolites these two form together could promote cancer. Others might suppress it.

But here’s the twist: When Methanobrevibacter interacts with CRC-causing bacteria like Fusobacterium nucleatum, the metabolic exchange is massive, going beyond the exchange of fermentation end products - amino acids, organic acids, and even metabolites linked to tumor biology.

This microbe is with M. smithii the most abundant archaeon in the human gut. What impact does it have on human health? Upcoming research will help to answer this question - luckily, the isolate is available and mechnistic studies can be performed.
