A fluffy black cat with large white eyes lies on its side on green grass beneath a textured sky fading from blue to pale pink. White handwritten text reads: “Maybe sometimes you want to do everything so badly that you end up doing nothing at all. That’s okay. Maybe you’re more tired than you realise. I just hope you know that taking care of yourself counts as doing something, too.”

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

AFM Statement on the Passing of Dolly Parton
Today, the entire community of professional musicians mourns the loss of an irreplaceable icon and a generous heart: Dolly Parton.
While the world knows her as a global superstar and philanthropist, we at the American Federation of Musicians of the US & Canada and Local 257 (Nashville Musicians Association) knew her as a steadfast champion for working musicians. Dolly was always very generous with her time and her money. Her extensive charitable work was never about public perception-she gave simply because she truly cared, always doing everything the right way to make sure that people were taken care of. She overcame every obstacle that came her way and broke down many barriers for women in the music business. Her influence went far beyond the boundaries of country music, but she never lost track of who she was and her values.
"Before she was an icon, Dolly was a working musician," says Tino Gagliardi, AFM International President. "Dolly never forgot the musicians who helped bring her music to life. By standing firm for solidarity and treating every player with dignity, she elevated our entire profession."
"Throughout her 58 years as a proud member in good standing of Local 257, she set the gold standard for supporting her band and fellow musicians. Dolly and her team consistently filed AFM union contracts for gigs, sessions, and tours, ensuring that the bands, singers, and studio musicians working alongside her received the benefits of union membership," says Dave Pomeroy, President Local 257.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, bandmates, and millions of fans. Rest in peace, Dolly. Thank you for the music and the solidarity.
