Important: conflict is not necessarily heat. Western storytelling tropes have conditioned us to think that conflict is automatically the most exciting and fascinating thing. But in fact, heat can just as easily come from tenderness and kindness and community-building. I often feel more suspense during a gentle sweet moment than during a tense fight scene or argument, because I get super invested in the sweetness and desperately want it to endure. Ironically, the more media I consume, the less suspenseful most thrillers seem, versus romantic comedies and low-incident cozy hangouts. Things that are engineered on purpose to create suspense often just feel too mechanical for me to care about what happens.

“As far as ‘Wanda June’ goes, I wrote the first version of the play 10 years ago. I live in Barnstable on Cape Cod and it often gets boring there, so one day my wife and I decided to attend a Great Books course. We started re reading Homer, and Odysseus the hero coming home from the wars really got to me. The hero‐warrior. He seemed so preposterous in modern terms. Heming way was alive then and he was going around shooting lions and tigers be tween the eyes and stuffing them and then encouraging other people to do the same. I didn't like that. So I sat down and wrote the play partly out of exas peration, partly because I wanted to try my hand at a new form. I called the play ‘Penelope’ and it was tried out experimentally at the Orleans Arena Theater on the Cape. Afterwards I threw the manuscript into an empty beer carton along with two other plays I'd written and forgot all about my thea trical aspirations for the next decade.”
