Great read from @adamtranter.bsky.social ⤵️ Technology should not be introduced at the expense of pedestrian freedom to use the highway safely and conveniently. We need to make sure that the most vulnerable road users are protected and prioritised so that our streets work for all.

We closed Abbeville Road in Clapham to cars for a few hours today and something truly radical and transformative happened. We saw a community grow. People came out to chat, laugh, listen, gossip, eat, drink and share. Just proves that streets are for people not just for cars.

Breaking news! @sportengland.bsky.social's #ActiveLivesSurvey shows that walking for leisure has increased by 6.8%. That's over 3 million adults in England who are walking more! But there’s clearly a need for safer, more pleasant streets, as fewer people are walking for travel. 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️

70% of wheelchair users said pavement parking was a regular problem, forcing them into the road. London can ban pavement parking; why can't the rest of the country? There seems to be widespread support for it; for example, 78% of Daily Express readers back a ban. Let's do it.

When I talk #accessibility. I often talk toilets. 250,000 disabled people couldn’t access public toilets so we had to change it. Proud of everyone who made this happen; 543 installations. Don't leave us out in the cold! We hear a lot about the importance of gritting carriageways when it's snowy and icy, but pavements are often forgotten. We're calling on local authorities to grit and clear pavements too, so we can all walk and wheel safely this winter.

Noticeable how few people left the station today, the walk towards Old Street felt strangely unsafe for a route I know well. Really noticed the change when I saw people, well lit, welcoming and awake public spaces. What makes you feel safe walking, wheeling and cycling on the street? #SaferStreets

Returning to work after a few days away in Norfolk. This pathway was ideal for opening all the senses on a mindfulness walk.
