Kind, but generally unhelpful. Work: archaeological and osteological ethics. Play: horror, religious syncretism, and (unpopular) how Iron Fist is actually awesome.

It’s so nice to be back in a place where I am routinely teased for my inability to pronounce all the vowels. I keep trying to explain that an Ø sounds like “DANGER” in my language.

My regularly scheduled plea to everyone who is legitimately, incandescently angry: please do not buy into the narrative that rural folks are the problem. And even if they are, their queer kid isnt. Rural folks aren’t the problem. It’s rich folks.

This ridiculous idea that academics are supposed to make sure conservatives feel good, even when the empirical evidence goes against what they believe. For people like Matty Y, that is what makes you 'serious'.

Just a professor standing in front of BlueSky demoralized because exams my students used to get a mean of 83% on prior to 2020 are now failed in large numbers. It seems that their ability to APPLY concepts to new contexts/domains has all but disappeared. I love these students & I am worried.

in an era when carnivore diet influencers are in charge of the american nuclear arsenal we have to admit the "annoying vegan" stereotype barely ever actually existed and the "all meat diet guy" is real, increasingly omnipresent, and way more annoying and inconvenient to actually be around

Calling all the PhDs I know to make monumental annoyances of themselves (and honestly, who better)
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang doesn't want "well-respected people" like PhDs and CEOs to criticize AI, especially in front of governments.

He labeled concerns about the AI technology a "doomer narrative": https://80.lv/articles/nvidia-ceo-doesn-t-want-well-respected-people-to-criticize-ai

The screenshot includes a color photo of Jensen Huang wearing his typical leather jacket. He is an Asian man, with glasses and silver hair. His overall affect is smug.

Not to vaguely scream into the void, but the onslaught of think pieces on folks “gaming” accommodations really goads me. “Accessibility” often is poorly thought out, limited in scope, and inconvenient (by design!) simply because parts of society don’t believe in any accommodations.

Among music fans, it’s considered rude to touch a cassette with your hands. When you need to handle a cassette, for example to remove it from the case or to change the side, it’s best to do so using small tongs, like the kind you would find with the cucumber slices at a reputable salad buffet.

It’s an uncomfortable feeling to have to explain yourself every time you speak about your religion. The association of a complex and nuanced spiritual experience with hate and violence feels awful. So, Happy Advent. May we all hope for peace and love as we wait for the coming of the spring.

There is something else intrinsically troubling about traditional femininity and cottagecore and the desire to homestead… because they require land. Ownership of land and homesteading slots uncomfortably into a neo-Manifest Destiny. I like pretty dresses, but not the romanticization of land grabs.

I have been saving my sanity by buying 50¢ abjectly wrecked Barbie dolls, repairing and repainting them and building a gothic dollhouse where they can all live in harmony. The number of doll limbs piled around my house may mean that I have in fact NOT saved my sanity. The opposite in fact.

I truly believe having the two of them advise on the issue would make the joke truly perfect (to me.)
A book cover in overly florid script featuring Ann Landers and Dear Abby (famously twins) in their 70s, smiling. The cheekiness of these ladies is belied by the absurd number of pearls that they are wearing.

In panel 2, labeled wren, a winter wren delicately sings tweedly tweedly tweedly. In panel 3, labeled warbler, a yellow warbler delicately sings sweet sweet. In panel 4, labeled heron in a death metal font, a heron screams KRAAGH against a background of fire.
