Huh. Today in "always look up the etymology because sometimes you're just repeating a myth but sometimes it's weirder and more incredible than you could have possibly imagined" www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/c...
Screenshot of Merriam Webster etymology note for cockamamie:
By the look and sound of it, cockamamie (also spelled "cockamamy") could have something to do with a rooster and the outrageous sound it makes. But in fact, cockamamie is believed to be an altered form of the term decalcomania, which refers to the process, invented in the mid-19th century, of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. (The word referring to the picture or design itself, decal, is a shortening of decalcomania.) The word decalcomania comes from French, with décalcomanie combining the verb décalquer, meaning "to trace" or "to transfer by tracing," and -manie, meaning "-mania." Starting in the 1930s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called decals or—in children's slang—cockamamies. Those familiar with today's temporary tattoos will understand quickly that these were regarded by many as silly novelties, lending the word cockamamie the necessary leeway for application to anything ridiculous.

It's funny that for years now people have been saying that using generative AI very obviously deskills you, and people kept going no no you're wrong you Luddite And now all the genAI CEO's keep coming out in public to announce they forgot how to read and do math and can't remember their address etc

Being a billionaire must be insane. You can buy new teeth, new skin. All your chairs cost 20,000 dollars and weigh 2,000 pounds. Your life is just a series of your own preferences. In terms of cognitive impairment it's probably like being kicked in the head by a horse every day

Pikachu in the Cupola Credit: ESA/NASA – S. Adenot flic.kr/p/2sCdqCr 🔭🧪
A special Astronaut Pikachu plush travelled to the International Space Station to join ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot as part of a collaboration between ESA and The Pokémon Company International.
In this image, Astronaut Pikachu floats inside the Cupola, the European-built observation module that offers spectacular views of Earth and is a favourite spot for astronauts living and working on the Station to watch our home planet pass by below.
The International Space Station orbits Earth around 400 km above it, circling the planet every 90 minutes and treating its crew to around 16 sunrises and sunsets each day – a beautiful sight that has now been shared with Pikachu. Since 2000, astronauts have lived and worked continuously aboard the Station, carrying out science research using the unique microgravity conditions in orbit.
Sophie has spent more than 200 days in space as part of her εpsilon mission, conducting scientific research and completing three spacewalks over the summer to help maintain the orbiting laboratory.
ESA and Pokémon are teaming up to inspire the next generation of explorers. Whether through science or imagination, discovery begins with curiosity.

of the many things to love about Tim Curry and Dolly Parton, here's one: It's as if every time they heard someone say, "you're going too big," they went BIGGER. Big presence, big hair, big charisma, big everything. Pouring one out for two artists who just WENT FOR IT and never apologized for that.

Not the most encouraging sign to be getting alerts like this before it even starts snowing
Eversource: Blizzard conditions expected. Damaging winds and snow could damage electric system and cause widespread and extended outages.
Hazardous conditions may delay our ability to safely respond. Based on current forecast, restoration could take 3-5 days. See storm center:

the magic of the Muppets is that there are two fourth walls. they constantly break the one that reminds the audience they are performers. they NEVER break the one that reminds the audience they are puppets. this dynamic is the key to their entire comedy style

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition, The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance Iconic imo
Photograph from 1911 taken by Herbert Ponting whilst with Scott's Antarctic Expedition

The monochrome photo is taken from within a cave. The walls of the cave are made of ice. The cave entrance is in the mid distance with two figures standing looking out towards a distant ship. Between them and the ship there is first a 'beach' of ice before the sea itself. The ship could be up to 800 metres away

What makes the photo so special is that where the figures are at the cave entrance there is a band of very white snow and ice (contrasting with the comparatively dark inside of the cave) that creates a stark framework in which the men and the ship are captured. It is made even more dramatic by the fact that the cave entrance is at least 30 metres high and is in the shape of a distorted elipse with the tail sloping off to the right at the top of the elipse

The photo being in monochrome in a largely white environment makes the photographers skill all the more laudable
