Many people put tasks on To Do lists explicitly *not* intending to complete them at all. They’re tasks weighing on the person’s mind, and writing it down gives them permission to deprioritise it.

I remember back when the Apple Newton was introduced. It was supposed to "learn" your handwriting over time but it seemed more likely it would train the user to write so it could read. I figure the same with AI - you won't teach it YOUR routine. It will teach you ITS routine.

This and the math thing in a way are good news. At the end of the day, LLMs and all their harnesses and bells and whistles still can't go beyond the distribution. They are great if you want to get to the mean. If you are out of the distribution, they can't replace you. They won't even know you.

@aoc.bsky.social: The best thing that we can do to rein in runaway costs at private institutions is by having tuition free public colleges and universities. “For anyone who wants to say that that’s pie in the sky and unrealistic… this is literally what baby boomers gave themselves.”

I feel like one of the most radical, best and most rebelliously good things you can do right now in the informational online space is just....give people credit, love, support and shoutouts. Even if they just inspired you or prodded a thought you built on, name them and thank them loudly.

The far right in Europe and the US very much depends on people seeing the superiority of our civilisation over the formerly colonialised peoples as permanent rather than a product of particular factors. Its anti-educational and anti-science attitudes are also likely to hasten our relative decline.

The SAVE database is notoriously slow in being updated. I'm an immigration attorney & my clients' medical and driver's licenses often depend on SAVE verification. I can't tell you how many times they get an initial rejection because SAVE hasn't been updated. Using that database for voter reg insane.

The idea of AI curing all diseases is, IMO, silly. Biomedical research is mostly limited by data, not ideas. Imagine saying AI will build a world-champion basketball team by replacing basketball coaches with hyperintelligent AI. You see the problem. Someone still needs to dribble and make shots.

So as a practical matter, Congress must delegate. But Trump/Vought want to be able to determine the final decisions, to reduce spending (contrary to the law), and pursue ideological control and petty revenge missions. That is what "the president's priorities" is a euphemism for.

When there's some activity or hobby or preference you find personally uninteresting or distasteful, it's generally mentally healthier to either A) try to see what other people like about it or B) say "it's not for me, but I'm happy for them". This will solve many problems in your life

Yeah, the easiest way to slow progress down would be to require that any model available to the public must make all of its weights public and state that there is no IP in model weights. That would mean there would be no way to make money, and the frontier would stop advancing. They'd hate that.

I'm convinced that this is just a big a reason for the tariffs as any (misplaced) economic claims: Tariffs give Trump discretionary power, and he likes being the sort of guy who can use govt power on a whim to impress people (in this case), or in return for other favors.

They want to know - and if there isn’t an answer they will invent one, and people will happily shill products to assuage their fears even though they do nothing to help or make it worse
