abolish the death penalty

There simply shouldn't be capital punishment. Yes even for *that* crime. It is cruel and unusual, and the state should not have a ritualized way of killing people who it has entirely in its power.

This reminds me of a historical tradition—oftentimes, if a person was sentenced to death, but the blade of the executioner's axe fell off, or the noose snapped, the condemned would receive a pardon. Maybe it's rooted in superstition, but it'd be a damn sight better than trying to execute her *again*

Fantastic article on how the extremely complex situation in Sudan exposes the failures of our rotted-out diplomatic corps. It's a grievous state of affairs, not least because of the hundreds of thousands (or millions) of people who will die by the end of this conflict

By the way, you can really tell by the way the death penalty is carried out that the point is the cruelty. The state doesn't need a cocktail of all these drugs. It could give the condemned person the drugs used for assisted dying; death would be painless and relatively quick. Suffering is the point

Here’s an extremely brief effort to explain why bond yields going up is actually not bad news.
September 28, 2026
Rates. 10y yields briefly traded above 5.2% today, closing up 7 bps on the session. As shown below, they're the farthest from fair value that they've been in some time based on our qualitative model.

Our model assumes 2% inflation over the long term plus an inflation risk premium (35 bps, to use explicit TIPS pricing). With those values fixed, below we show the implicit growth (including risk premium around growth) forecast from the market given the consensus range of term premium (after backing out some amount off growth risk premium).
Current pricing assumes trend growth above 2% and rising.

This is a very cool game, but I think something is busted. I won the second round by a very healthy margin (nine points!) but it's telling me I lost by a hair. There are a few other cases where the game shows "NaN" instead of some value

remember prince zuko: a year has 16 months, except for so-called short years which have 15. years 6, 12 and 24 of the trigintasenary cycle are always short, and year 18 is short only if it's a cycle ending in 2, 4, 7 or 9

Is this meant to say that Talarico's God embodies the spirit of agápē or something? What is "Christopretensism", when you pretend to be a Christian? But then why specify "agapotheist"?

Found a rather amusing footnote in the book I'm reading. (From Foolsburg: The History of a Town, by Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky)
12. Wartbeardin remembered that the prince Sviatoslav Igorevich...with the same greeting:

We know about Sviatoslav's custom of announcing a war from the Russian Primary Chronicle. Present-day rulers of Russia are not as chivalrous. They do not even call war a war, but a "special military operation." Of course, Wartbeardin, announcing a "war" on the Foolsburgers, could be certain of victory whether he warned them or not.

I think the problem with people saying "this is a great idea" is that her being in the Senate instantly makes her a somewhat-above-replacement-level senator (like, slightly better than Leticia James). She would have no seniority—90% of the caucus would be more senior—and little popularity
