The deadliest myth regarding the pangolin is the persistent, unscientific belief in the healing powers of its carapace. Despite the keratin scales having the same remedial properties as human nails, traditional Chinese homeopathic medicine underpins the robust demand for illegal pangolin body parts.

Few statisticians know that Frank Yates, pioneer of experimental design, is responsible for the annoying practice of indicating 3 tiers of statistical significance by stars (*p ≤ 0.05, **p ≤0.01, ***p ≤ 0.001). He soon regretted it and “vehemently opposed its unthinking use”. And here we are.

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) was a pioneering naturalist, entomologist & scientific illustrator whose meticulous artwork & observations: 🦋 Revolutionized the study of insects 🐜 Laid early groundwork for #ecology 🐞 Permanently changed how we understand insect life It's #InsectWeek #WomenInSTEM
A side-by-side image of the German-Dutch naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717), celebrated for her groundbreaking contributions to entomology and ecology. On the left, a formal historical oil portrait depicts Merian as a young woman from the chest up against a dark, minimalist backdrop. Facing forward with a slight turn to the right, she maintains a calm, serious expression. She wears a black dress accented by a wide, sheer white lace collar draped over her shoulders, a dark jeweled brooch, a double-strand pearl necklace, and large teardrop pearl earrings. Her brown curly hair is partially covered by a black fabric head cap. On the right is a vibrant book cover titled "Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis." The cream-colored cover features her detailed scientific illustrations, including a large blue and brown butterfly, a yellow butterfly, a lizard, caterpillars, a large blue passionflower, and assorted foliage, showcasing her legacy of documenting insect life cycles and host plants.

Black-and-white historical portrait of Dr. Aletta Henriëtte Jacobs (1854–1929), the pioneering Dutch physician and women's rights activist, shown in a circular frame with a textured border. She has curly dark hair piled up, a serious expression, and wears a high-necked dress with elaborate floral embroidery on the bodice. As the first woman to officially attend a Dutch university and earn a medical doctorate in the Netherlands (graduating in 1879), she became one of the country's first female doctors. In 1882, she opened the world's first birth control clinic in Amsterdam, advocated for women's suffrage, better working conditions for women, the regulation of prostitution, and international peace efforts.
