Our paper on how understorey vegetation responds to enhanced forest structure was just published @jappliedecology.bsky.social! We found an increase in alpha- and gamma-diversity driven by heterogeneity in light conditions at the landscape-scale 🌱🌳🥬 besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Enhancing structural heterogeneity in managed forest landscapes promotes gamma but not beta diversity in understorey plant communities
Our findings highlight the benefits of enhancing structural heterogeneity for understorey plant diversity in managed forest landscapes. Specifically, management strategies that create a spatial mosai...

#Forests: Canopy gaps and deadwood increase diversity of #bats and #birds: New study @currentbiology.bsky.social. Bats benefit from variety between different forest patches, birds react strongly to local enrichment on-site. @betafor.bsky.social @cofeuniwue.bsky.social ➡️ go.uniwue.de/forest-div

5 years ago I joined a field work campaign in the stunningly beautiful Swedish primary forests, still one of my all-time favourite fieldwork experiences!🌲🌿 Now there is a new study out lead by Didac Pascual and Anders Ahlström from Lund University www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
science.org
Higher carbon storage in primary than secondary boreal forests in Sweden
Boreal forests provide considerable global land carbon storage and uptake, but they are being rapidly transformed to managed secondary forests, with poorly quantified implications for ecosystem carbon...

Limited thermal tolerance in tropical insects and its genomic signature - Nature
A survey of tropical insect populations and thermal tolerance limits indicates that species from lowland areas have low capacity to survive increased temperatures, and that thermal tolerance is limited by fundamental properties of protein architecture.

New paper out! 📃 Enhanced structural complexity in forests has limited effects on #soil abiotic properties, but #microbial activity and biomass respond site-specifically. Soil moisture and understory growth link to microbial functions. 💧🧫🌳🍁 Read it here: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Inconsistent short-term effects of enhanced structural complexity on soil microbial properties across German forests

Insects are struggling with major global change drivers, like climate change and habitat loss. Researchers from @ecoresearchzoo3.bsky.social have now investigated, how these threats interact. The results show that bees suffer in particular. 🐝☀️🏙️ ➡️ go.uniwue.de/beesheatland...
