Pretty sure that this isn’t going to be my most popular post. The humble rat is often unfairly reviled. This little mother was moving her family one pup at a time with bravery and care.

A group of endangered Borneo Pygmy Elephants cooling off in a tributary of the mighty Kinabatangan River. A beautiful encounter, 17 years after my last time meeting them. For how much longer will we be able to experience this joy, with only 1500 left in the wild.

Last night I found one of my favourite things to find. A gorgeous Atlas moth. I will never get used to seeing these remarkable creatures.

This is a Chorotypus. A type of dead leaf grasshopper. It landed on the fence beside me while I was walking at night. The camo doesn’t stand up well on a fence, but what an extraordinary creature. I’m in awe of its design.

One of my favourite finds came on the edge of a Bornean rainforest - the astonishingly beautiful and absolutely fascinating Orchid Mantis. It feels like it is entirely overdressed for its diet of bugs. Extravagant for the sake of it.

The extraordinary privilege of going for a walk at night and meeting a critically endangered Sunda pangolin. Every time is an honour. One day, if we don’t act, humans might talk about a time when scaled mammals walked the earth.

Oof! Someone is feisty! Wagler’s pit vipers in Singapore are usually so chilled out. Clearly this big girl was not! The phone was zoomed and I wasn’t in strike range.

The unique Dragon-headed Katydid sitting on a leaf over a fast flowing Borneo stream. Unfortunately I couldn’t get close enough to get a better photo without disturbing it.

Nature never fails to boggle the mind. This dead leaf is actually a Leaf-mimic moth found on the trail in the highlands of Borneo.

The astonishing moment that I found a large female Wagler’s pit viper devouring a freshly captured fruit bat. That’s why they hang out in fig trees.

This thumbnail-sized miracle from the forests of Singapore is called a Man-faced stink-bug (Catacanthus incarnatus). Can you see why? Can’t unsee that.

People are going crazy to see the migrating woodcocks in the heart of Manhattan this year. How has this become the new craze? Here is my blog from when I used to spend my lunchtimes with them - incidentalnaturalist.com/2020/03/04/w...

A crash in the canopy above my head. I Iooked up and there they were. The first time in months I’d found one of the Raffles’ banded langur families. With only around 75 individuals in Singapore, this is a critically endangered primate. So peaceful, so gentle, so beautiful 😌

No bigger than a lanky dwarf rabbit, the Lesser mousedeer is one of the world’s smallest known hoofed animals. I heard a crunching sound coming from the gloomy undergrowth. Peering through the foliage, I found this little guy cracking open seed pods.

I picked up a GoPro this week to see how I can use it for some wildlife work. This is my first ever recording on an action cam. Needs some work, but not the worst start. Filming blind and full stretch of a 4’ GoPro selfie stick. Juvenile Gold-ringed cat snake.
